as long as you are sharpening chains you are not making better money rebuilding carburetor and replacing top ends.
That is the risk with letting someone else sharpen your stuff. The job could get dumped on the kid that normally sweeps the floors or a heavy handed guy who rushes through them while burning the cutters, and flattening the rakers.

The guy that used to sharpen for me before I learned to do my own was pretty heavy handed. At best you'd get 4 sharpenings out of 3/8 LGX. Sometimes only 3. They were always happy to sell you a new one though :envy:

i always quote £5 to £10 depending on length, preferably in situ so that i can test the cut before and after
freehand ground, depth gauges included

I been thinking about a chain saw maintenance business. Sharpening the saw chains, teeth, rakers and squaring the bar rails and cleaning the bar groove plus greasing the bar sprocket. How are you going to price it? I’m stumped.

Sharpening teeth only,,,,,up to 20” chain
Sharpening teeth only from 22” to 42” chain.
Sharpening teeth and rakers up to 20” chain.
Sharpening teeth and rakers 22” to 42” chain.

Clean bar grooves, grind the rails, grease the bar nose sprocket, clean the air filter.

A complete cleaning of the saw with all of the above? Package deal,,,,price?

Who will pay for a package deal? Our time plus consumables used?

I’ll go broke
good part of an hour ,40$

good part of an hour ,40$

To me it's about having fun and make a few bucks that I wouldn't if I didn't.

There is no man hour benefit to me in this, I'm a really slow working perfectionist. If I was to have a decent man hour salary it would cost as much as the complete chainsaw to make it worth while... almost

The owner pays $10 per chain. No matter the length. When we bring in 12" 1/4 picco they make out well. When we bring in 42" .404 we make out well. But 1 price for commercial customers makes it easy on us, so we keep coming back.
That said, I still hand file, because my edge lasts 2x longer than the machine ground stuff that the company has.
You should plan on touching up the rakers.

Yea well, if you sharp at 30/60* it will be standard, if you sharp at 25/65* it will last longer...
