Well gang, I hate to admit this but I blew my "never blew a saw in my life" today in a BIG way. the all NOS 850 with US chrome jug let go after half a tank in a BIG way. only thing i did different was us my new torque wrench to torque the rod bolts. I think I am throwing it in the trash. All NOS parts in the engine to boot. I know it happens but ugh! Its just a saw right?68152093224__52F883B6-4D42-4824-9966-C193E689D54B.fullsizerender.JPG68152094433__CD1FE140-D083-48E6-B700-FFCD8458402B.JPG68152475314__88FF31FB-109E-4794-8C63-B5A27A987FD8.JPG68152473830__E06D597B-61FA-48CD-8A46-B5C8CF614E87.JPG68152263258__7A514E29-DFEB-4185-9C82-B00AD7F7B5C8.JPG68152472663__36B0B267-2B54-412E-958D-87FEBB40DB64.JPG68152147408__DB2CD19E-89CF-4706-B875-AA92515D7CDB.JPG68152114247__CCF66B3E-F2D7-4B8D-8E47-238E65456110.JPG to torque the rod bolts. Man that sucks! Sorry about your luck there.

Its just a saw. Lesson learned. I was all excited to have a torque wrench to "do it right". I think I out smarted myself. Not going to trust that wrench again. Sad thing is it ran really well until....!

I can't like that, I'd say welcome to drag racing, except you weren't. I've seen that happen to my buddies Keith Black hemi's too many times.
Things happen... faulty wrench? I messed up? bad part? who knows. I was due a catastrophic failure, never had one in 20 years, so I am ahead of the curve.

Holly dog soldiers man. Bet that was impressive to witness. Was it full chap under load?

Holy crap batman! What an impressive failure. Very unfortunate for the engine...i take it you did not catch any pieces in your face or elsewhere? Lucky.
Nope, nothing hurt but my pride and billfold thankfully. I was on my outside wood bench where I tune. I had already tuned it and ran about a half tank of fuel through it. Went back in and stuck a bar on it and was tweaking the carb when she let go. she was a pretty one too lol.

I was always saying "I have never had a saw blow" Uncle said its gonna happen one day. I called him after it happened. He said "I have blew a few myself since 1977"

That hurts 😕

It happens. I just would like to know if the rod cap bolts backed out, or if it was a fluke. A head scratcher for me lol.
Unfortunately you may never have the answer to that question. If I were you I'd be cussing for a month of Sundays. It's good that you have that kind of outlook though.Material things can be replaced whereas a human life cannot. You could've been seriously hurt if things went differently.

I was a bit aggravated for an hour or so. Came in the house and had a bourbon. I never really thought about the possibility I could have been hurt. But my wife and others have lol. I can always make more $$, and this saw has no sentimental value to me. The never ran US chrome jug, nos rod, and nos C piston are the only thing that’s a touch harder to replace. All else i have plenty of

So guys in light of the engine failure...so sorry for your loss but it can be repaired. Those who have been following my sp81 assembly...this is the last video i have so far. I will make another one day if i get a day off. Ill say i really enjoyed the project as with all of them. I like taking them apart and putting them together. I hope you enjoyed it. I did.

On the old tank handle of my 850 there are 3 small screws on the underside that look like they hold the top & bottom portions together.Does anyone know if those screws were meant to come out & the inside of the tank to be serviced? I'd only like to do this "for science".I'm sure the 2 halves were epoxied together as well.

If you could find (or even if you have one) an 82cc cylinder you could have it bored out like Vinny did a while back.I'm sure the rod & piston are a bit easier to come by than the cylinder is.
