Threw a spare 5hp motor on the 50+ year old splitter to get her up and going to split this elm today. Nasty stringy stuff. The 20hp v-twin is awaiting a few parts then that will go on along with a new pump. Probably 16gpm...maybe more.

Well, turns out he bought the 11 gallon a minute already for me from the local tractor supply, it was a thank you for doing all his Firewood. He wants me to upgrade my reservoir, do you guys see any benefit from going from 3 gallon to 5 gallon? Right now it has a single 1 gallon reservoir.

The biggest benefit is the fluid will have more time to release heat in a bigger reservoir with more fluid. A bigger reservoir will have more surface area for heat exchange.

yes! More oil the better.
Yes, but it's not to reduce damage. It's a cost factor. Big tanks with lots of oil is cheap and keeps the system simple. Really you can run with a lot less fluid if you have a fan forced cooler, thermostat and bypass would be even better so the oil is cooled once it exceeds a certain temp. Now your $2k splitter is $3k just from adding (at minimum.) A charging system and battery to the engine, a cooler, fan and thermo switch.

Exactly. Tank design matters a lot too. A tall wide thin tank works a lot better than a cube.

But in all seriousness, how much gain is there to be had in all that??
Would just a bigger reservoir be more convenient and beneficial without all the added moving pieces
He has a GIANT cylinder off a Case 580 he wants to turn into a splitter, I’m sure when we build that, we may go all out. But we haven’t had the need to build it due to his 6way timber Wolf (his house ) and my hodgepodge splitter being sufficient for me.
Just a reminder, mine is/ was a dieder that was raised to waist height and then a 8hp tossed on it
Now it will be a 12hp and the pump replaced with a 11gpm
Also, what would you guys do with the old 7pm?
