So if the 372xp has the more sensible ergo design with the angled handle that surely means it is a more advanced saw than the Jonsered?

Could someone please explain even briefly why Huskys and Jonsereds are so similar, this may sound dumb but even after years in treework I never really looked into or understood the whole Jonsered/Husky thing.

Thanks

Husky makes both saws
- the different handlebar angles is the only difference to consider, really....:givebeer: :givebeer:

They are the same saw with the main difference being the handle bar angle. (and color)

The 372 can be had with the small filter (like the one in your pic) which is the same setup as the 2171, or the taller HD filter (not available on the 2171).

Same saw, they run the same, it is what you like and feels better in your hands. Some guys like the differant angle, some guys don't.

There is no problem putting the HD air filter on the 2171, but you have to have the 372 top cover, it fits to the 2171 (the saw looses quite much of it good looks though). As already mentioned, the front handle angle is different. The general impression often is that the more bent handle of Husky is good for limbing (hence good for 346 etc), whereas the more straight handle on Jonsereds is good for pointing out the direction when felling (2171 beeing quite much of a felling saw). An advantage of the 2171 is that the covers let more air surround the engine so it will run a bit cooler. For max power you should buy the 2171, put the 75cc on it, port it, muffler mod it, 372 top cover and HD air filter. If you get a better deal on the 2171, there is no reason not to buy it.

Summary:

372:
+ Handle angle (if you prefer bent handle)
+ HD air filter fits without mod.

2171:
+ Many people think it looks better.
+ Better covers
+ Handle angle (if you prefer straight handle)

You really need to pick them up and compare, it can't be done on the couch.

I have an old injury in my left arm which still makes me somewhat handicapped in certain situations: I do not have the strength I used to, I have bad circulation in the hand, and it's motions are not as predictable and precise as it once was. When I compile what is harder for me to hold or do, or how I tend to get exhausted faster, I gets pretty clear that I should benefit a lot from Husqvarnas front handle angle. My arm and hand should work better when having to grip something angeled like that.

However, when I handle them in the shop the Jonsered feels just so right for me, and there's no explanation to why that is!

Now, I'm gonna get me a Husky as well, if for nothing else to keep on comparing them... If you can't get to compare a 372 to a 2171, see if you can find and handle a 357 against a 2156, or a 359 against a 2159. It might give you a clue on what you like the best.

Why does General motors make the same model in slighty differant names?

To make money from a broader range of client/customers.

It cannot be a more advanced saw if the saw is the exact same saw with a differant handle bar. Ask sawtroll, he explained it some time ago about the straight vs angled handles. It is simply a choice of preference.

Hell, I put a 385 Xp handle on my 2186 when I had one. You can do the same with the 2171/372.

Yep, As long as you change the tank also.

Well said, and a whole lot to that.

Maybe this is part of it: When I'm working, I hold my saw all the way to the right of my body, so that a kickback, should it happen, will throw the saw past my shoulder rather than at my head. For that stance, the Jred fits much better to me.

I talked to a Husky rep once at an OPE show...I asked him what he knew about saws, and he said Husky had certified him to be a saw instructor. I asked about the handle angle, and he said the Husky was supposed to be more ergonomic. Trying to figure out why he thought that, I asked him to hold the saw for a bucking cut. He stood right behind it. I asked him, politely, what the hell he was doing. "Aren't you worried about where a kickback would put that bar?" He said "that's the way you're supposed to stand." After demonstrating, again politely, why he was dead flat 100% completely totally and unequivocally wrong, he just sorta stammered.

Morally of the story...given where I work with my saw, I can't get fully comfortable with the Husky bend. My wrist feels better supported for my way of working. Others may have a different preference, given the way they hold their saws in relation to their body. Nobody's necessarily right nor wrong, but for &^%@'s sake, don't stand behind your saw.

Electrolux bought husqvarna and jonsered. They are assembled in the same factories. elux bought poulan pioneer/partner and many other saw manufacturers. They keep jonsered around because of name recognition and extra dealer support but the saws are essentialy rebadged husqvarnas.

Not trying to be smart guy but,,,

Why the husqvarna's are not rebadged jonsered's.??
The jonnys do look a whole lot better.

What else do you have to change other than the filter or the filter cover?

I agree it would look bad, but it is not available through Jonsered that way. I never said you couldn't put it on...

BTW, the intake is differant too.

Hey Peter, if the HD filter is so good, why don't they put it on the G models (372xpg, or 2171W?

Yep, As long as you change the tank also.

Not on the 385/2186. My Jred had the grey handle on it, only because I didn't have a Jred dealer close. Husky dealer had it in stock.

It was a 100% bolt on deal, no tweaking, no missing screws, etc.

I had a 2071 and 2171, but never tried to swap handles. I'll take your word they are differant, but I highly doubt it.

The husqvarna saws come out one year before the jred model as I said this is good for jred because they can cherrypick the best models redesign (rebadge) them and sell them. I like jonsered saws but I liked the bent handle for some reason so I bought the husky. The other differances I noticed are the choke knob is differant and the starter cover. I think the starter cover on the 2171 lets more air in to cool the engine imo and I do like the looks of the lower top. I would like to think with the bent handle the saw would kick back away from my face and that is another big plus for the 372xp I hope I never find out if that is true though.

Let's hope neither one of us find out!, but my guess is that the opposite would be true...the handlebar on the Husky would pivot the bar back toward your body, while the Jred, being at a right angle, would throw it past your shoulder.

Not so always

Not all Jonsereds come out a year later than the Husky version. The 2153 is only a couple of months behind the NE346XP.

There are exceptions sometimes it takes less or more time depending on the model but usually about a year for the most part. I think in this case they were waiting for the new topend instead of creating a 346xp jonsered or they had lucky timing and got the larger topend by chance.

A little later here

ST -
They became fairly avaiable here in the US in Early December some of the Mail order guys had them. Where I am - at my dealer it was the end of Decemer. So if the 2153 is now here, it's only been maybe two months. Pretty quick.

Hello, You have to change the big black cover (on top of the red saw body) on the 2171, not just the small cover covering the air filter. If you want I can take a pic some day. A friend of mine runs that setup. I didn't say the HD filter is that good ;) It gives a liiiiittle more power. I don't use it since I think the saw becomes more bulky and the gain is so small.
