Im shopping for a new or used ground saw, for cutting firewood & maybe some dead wooding.
I have a little acreage & a fireplace.Im not thinking pro. but not home owner either. I have been looking @stihl ms 280 & also thinking about husqvarna saws.
Any advice as far as choosing a good saw for this application.

I have a old lightweight poulan that is not very reliable, but works for my limited climbing work.

Thanks, Buzz

Both are GREAT saws Husky may be a little less expensive for a comparable model. I have always chosen Stihl because of proximity of dealer with service.

Good luck

what diameter wood are u cutting.the stihl 290 super is an excellent saw have one for 15 years.the other saw to look at is the dolmar 5100s I hear its an excellent saw light weight and reliable.the only saws I run are stihls but I hear dolmar has stepped up to the plate.

If you have a dealer that's convenient to your area, the Dolmar 5100 is great saw, without the pro price. Definately worth checking out, easy in the hands, if I had to replace my 028, the 5100 would be my first choice in a new saw.

Have fun shopping.

You might as well scroll on down to the chainsaw forum here and take a look - or just use the search function for "firewood saw"

If your looking at 50cc saws I'd go with either a Dolmar 5100, Stihl 260 or a Husqvarna 346xp.

I've got an MS280 that is a few years old and couldn't be happier. I've really pushed it w/ a 20" bar and the thing just won't run out of power. The 20" is a little overkill, I may buy a 16" for some work this weekend. If I do I'll let you know how much of an animal it is with the smaller bar.

I have a Husky 359 that I have been happy with but for the money you cant go wrong with the dolmar 5100. If you are set on stihl the others on here can probably help.

another vote for the 5100

I have two, with 18 and 24 inch bars and they are the most impressive saws I have owned. I also own the 7900 [full wrap] it has relegated my 660 to a big bar only saw. For the price of 7900 you could almost pruchase two 5100's. I would rather have two saws...

odd thought

I have always believed that you don't buy a saw for what you expect to cut. You buy one step bigger. You can put a smaller bar on a bigger head, and get the job done faster, but the other way is not as good of plan. check your area for dealers, and buy accordingly.

I have a Stihl MS 290 with 18" bar.

Saw is excellent... this is my 2nd year cutting with it. I cut between 5-10 cords a year, hopefully more this year.

Just finally put a new chain on it a couple months ago. Awesome saw. :greenchainsaw:

Are you the guy that was cutting up the tree down over the bank by the creek from the firehouse about a year or so ago?

Sorry, that wasn't me. I try and not cut down over banks! Too much work.

Stihl, Husky

I am in Kansas City and have lots of Stihl dealers and a couple of Husky dealers.

Have been looking at Stihl 270, 270C, 290.

Also Husky 345, 353.

Kinda like the slightly lighter weight and slightly lower cost of the Husky.

Looking to fell 18 to 20" diameter trees and cut into firewood.

Want something that will last me for years and will be reliable.

Any thoughts on my list of saws? Recommendations?

Ok with spending in the $300 to $400 range.

Thank you.

I would suggest that you look at the Husky 346XP also. It is the same displacement and weight as the 345, but about 1/2 HP more power, 2,200 RPM more, 20" bar ability, and adjustable oil flow.

I have Husqvarna and Stihl. They are both great saws. You'll hear a bunch of brand loyalty here, but the bottom line is find a dealer you like and then pick a saw that he sells.

Whatever saw you get you'll be happier with at least a 20" bar maybe a 24" to simplify your bucking. At that size maybe a second saw with a 16" or 18" for lighter work.
