When did you buy the 441?
If after Jan 2007 it has a 1 year warranty, Pro use, think it's still 90 days

Yep, still under warranty. At a dealer now, getting repaired.

I was going to do it myself, but figured it they are willing to handle the claim, why not let Stihl get a potential problem logged in the system. Might save some other folks a bit of hassle.

Thanks for the tip PA, I'll keep my eye on that. Hopefully its not a weak point in the design. I wish I had bought a 70 cc saw long time ago, be it a 440, 460, 441. Even for just a firewood cutter and odd job person, its still worth it. The power and saved time alone is worth it.

Me too. Now that I'm on the 70cc fix, it's just hard to look at smaller saws, although they are cute.

It's about the perfect size. Still can limb with them. Yet they will pull a big bar if needed. Even with buying the 280 and 660, I still find myself reaching for the 441 quite a bit. 70cc is just about perfect for most cutting jobs.

You'll really like it PA!! It's a super-good saw. My 440 is my go-to saw. Dp the muffler an you'll really like it. That 440 of mine impresses me, more and more everyday I use it. Vibes and handle bar angle don't affect me at all. Personally, I can't tell the difference, cept the filtration on my 385, that is a whole nother story.:greenchainsaw: :chainsaw:

Hoping to get out tomorrow and work on some Hemlocks. We are to get some ice tonight so will have to see how the weather shapes up.

I do have a brand spanking new 24" GB Titanium Sprocket nose bar I'm planning to throw on it. Just to compare the Stihl on the 441 to the GB on the 440. I did get a 25 incher with the saw, so will set that aside as a backup bar.

As far as filtration, should I expect nightmares or just give it some maintenance every couple of tankfuls?

I run a 20" stihl ES bar on mine and it is perfect with that size bar. But would prolly pull the 24" pretty good too. As far as filtration goes, If you cut all day, then it'll need a brushing off with your hand at lunch then clean it thoroughly when you go home. My 385 will run all day long and not even have as much as a dusting by the end of the day. The 066 and 460 are the same as the 440 as far as filtration goes.:greenchainsaw:  :chainsaw:

Which of you 440 owners cut hard wood? My 440 handles the 24" bar with skip okay but not great. If the bar is buried in oak I do have to be careful to not bog it. It rips through pine no problem. That has me thinking about a larger saw, but then it would also be a heavier saw and less handy. Thoughts?

I do, I do, I do.

The 440/044 is most commonly found with a 20" bar in these parts. It will pull a 24 with full comp (I don't run skip), but it runs much better with a 20" and 8T rim.

I'm pulling the BS flag out on this one. I love my 440, but it is not a 385, and won't outcut one stock. With a 20" bar, they are fairly close, but put a 24 or bigger on each and see which one has the advantage. The 385 is a more powerful saw, but it is also heavier and on a bigger/wider frame.

Even with the DP cover it is a good runner, but it still isn't a 385xp. lol

I cut mainly oak, My 044 has a 20 inch bar with full round chisel but I like it for limbing purposes epically cause it is getting tired. Both my 460 and 660 sport 24 inch bar's with full round chisel and pull it no problem. If you dont mind the weight and have the money then you may want the 660. If you want something that handles like your 440 but just weighs a little more get the 460, dual port the muffler and you should have plenty of power. Now that said, if you are like me and learned on old slow torquey saws you have to learn to quit working the dawgs because the new saws do not like that and will bog with less pressure. I still have not learned and bog my 660 on occasion when Its buried.

Yes, it is the yellow damper on the bottom front of the saw. It's on the opposite side of the spring.

Mine had a huge split in it that was letting the handle hit the back of the main baffle, just under the filter cover.

I still like the saw, and even considered buying another. If I don't like the vibes on the 440 (now that I'm spoiled) I would consider another 441.

Congrats on the new saw. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little jealous. (been looking for a new one reasonbly priced).

A lot of guys are going to hate me for this, and let me start by saying that I love my 440. It is a light 70cc that runs damned good with the dp cover.

The 441 is more of a saw. It wieghs a little more, but it is more HP, more (broader) torque curve, less vibes and a heck of a filtration setup on it.

I believe you will not be as happy with it as you are with your 441. Guys that ran the 441 before the 440 can't stand the 440. Guys that ran a 440 from the get go, can't stand the 441.

Truth be told they are both great saws, but the 441 is a nicer saw all the way around.

here's my thoughts on your 440 questions:

For the HD Air filter, just check it every couple tanks. It isn't bad when you are cutting clean wood with a sharp chain, but when the chain dulls just a smidgen and the wood is a little dirty. the filter will need more attention.

The A/v is not bad at all imo, but it isn't near as smooth as the 441.

I have 4 70-80cc saws and love every one of them. The 440 is not the most powerfull one out there, but the extra light weight (for a 70cc saw) and good power make it many peoples' favorite. The 440 and 7900 are my go to saws.

If you seriously don't like it and want a 441, I will take the 440 off of your hands.

I know this is of topic. But I thought I saw a couple people say the 460 Magnum is getting hard to find. The dealer by me has one for sale. I would be happy to ship it to someone if the wanted it. I think they have a price of $830 on it. It's close to a 440 in size so I thought this might be relevant. On a side not I have a 460 and love it. I just ordered a 8t for it. I have a 24inch bar on it now. I am going to a 20inch though.

Trade the guy back the clutch cover before you use it & get the long style . Dont forget the outer dawg when you order the dual port. :chainsaw: :chainsaw:
