Just for giggles, is there any reason I couldn't remove the engine from my 024 and replace it with a spare short block I have for an 026. Looking at the parts diagrams, the saws appear to be the same series. Obviously the parts numbers are different for the P/C replacements as they have differing displacements. I'm wondering if this is similar to the 290/310/390 engines all fitting in the same "frames"

For all of you "why would you want to?" folks out there - becasue I can. Or at least I THINK I can. Will the 026 engine fit in the 024 saw?

AFAIK, the only difference between those two saws is the top end. All you have to replace is the p/c.

...so what you're suggesting is just putting an 024 fuel tank and handle on an 026??? and maybe the plastic top covers as well?

The 024/024 Super/026/260 don't have a clamshell type shortblock like the 290/310/390. IIRC, the 024 is 42mm bore, 024 Super 44mm bore, 026 44mm bore with longer stroke than 024/024 Super, and the 260 has the 44.7mm bore with the longer stroke.

This will work fine, if you have a complete 026 crankcase and p/c.

no, it is not the same as the 290/310/390 series of saws, and no you can not put a 026 p/c on a 024, the stroke is diffrent

Yes, you're right, an 024 super is the same crank as an 026.

There has been one for sale locally (024 with an 026 P&C). Seller says crank is the same. Also says some times it runs good, other times not so much.

From what I read, 024 should be a short stroke. I'd love to hear how a short block swap goes.

If you have the parts time and patience, do it.

Perhaps I wasn't clear ...

I have a complete 026 short block - piston, cylinder, crankshaft, seals, bottom pan - all of it. Yes it is a clam shell design. (Edit - I was wrong my spare 026 parts are P/C only - not a clam shell short block)

Sounds like the 026 short block will fit into the 024 tanks/handle/housing. (Edit: This propsed swap will NOT work)

Right?

EDIT: I was wrong as I stated in a later post. The spare 026 parts I have are P/C only. They definiately WILL NOT fit into an 024 chassis. Thanks to all of you for setting me straight.

Kind of. I'm suggesting taking the entire engine (P/C, crank, seals, all of it) out of an 024 and replacing it with a short block assembly desinged as a replacement for an 026. EDIT: It won't work, my spare 026 parts are P/C only not a clam shell short block as I thought

Haven't ever torn my 026 apart, but the short block assembly that I bought as a repalcement spare for the 026 is definitely (EDIT - is definitely NOT) a clam shell design.

Thanks. If I do it, I'll definitely report back.

Hold the phone guys - you are right and I'm an idiot!!!

can you post a pic, the 026 is not a clamshell design

You all are right, and I'm wrong. I've been playing around with a 390 replacement short block for too long. The replacement parts I have for the 026 are P/C only. Will definitely not work on 024

So sorry boys. Have mercy on me. :msp_sad:

Oh, it must be an oh twenty five spare engine? 024,026,028,034,036,038 saws all have the bar oil tank as part of the crankcase. 017,021,023,025,029,039 all have a drop in clamshell crankcase.
