just got this one can some on ID of the year made it I believe the serial # is 161764474 looks to be a keeper

Comp is ok, but not perfect, really want that thing at 175 give or take ... but it might be carboned up a little.
I'd definitely check the piston through exhaust port ... if there's any sign of rings being carbon impacted, I'd rip off the jug, clean everything real good, and maybe even throw a new ring set on it.
 
Well the fact that it has flippy caps completely takes away any chance it is an 046 (or 044). I have seen the occasional 046 with one flippy cap due to the rear handle being changed.
If the SN comes back as an MS440, I suspect you have an....MS440.
In my opinion, if you thought you were buying an 046 and that's not what it is, you should get with the seller and have a discussion. (unless it was such a good deal it doesn't matter what model you bought)
 
Well for sure it's a ms 440 from the middle 2000 will be given it a good cleaning

No doubt an MS 440. Put a HD-2 filter on to go along with that dp muff cover and it may run like an 046!
Is this known as a Madsen handle ? and is that a dual port muffler on it now? As I just got it, and a new member to this sitei I am trying to pick any info I can on saws I have . I sure do appreciate ALL the help & info. This 440 I think was a nice find and I was thinking of saleing it. ?? From what I've read these are good saws .I just sold my jonsered 66e that was in great shape and sold it for what I was asking on C L here in ORE. this is a great place. and I do look forward to asking more questions thanks for everyones help jim
