Well, a while back I had been thinking of getting myself another old and broken stihl chainsaw to repair and, well yeah, play with. I'd been hankering for a ms460 but all the ones I'd recently seen on ebay kinda looked too new - i.e. not enough challenge or too expensive.
So when my wife mentioned that she had seen a 064 on a non-auction site I got slightly intrigued. I did a little research, and err... the next morning kind of went a bit crazy and phoned the seller up, and soon found me and my daughter driving 110 miles around the english motorways with 120 quid in my wallet to meet the seller.
I didn't take any piccies on the day of purchase - I took some later that should give you a rough idea of what's there:

On the phone the seller had told me "the saw coughs after a few pulls - but does not run". When we finally met him and he handed me the saw I tried to start it. Umm... well.. it's a big ol' saw, and I'm not exactly superman... but after about 8 pulls it fired and kind of ran on full choke. I was a bit surprised given the seller's original tale! I think he's selling a few saws - and had forgotten about each one a bit. I then knocked her onto half choke and she continued to rev - but since a few other people were close by I quickly flicked it off. Anyway I paid the guy and we parted.
I guess it must be a pretty tough saw since when we got home I had a quick look at the fuel and there was scarcely a drop of very dirty gas:

So anyway I'm planning on replacing the missing parts and getting this saw running nice. I'm not sure quite how pretty I'll get it looking - for me for first thing to do is get it mechanically sound. If you want to see any more of the first piccies we took - they are here in this album:

Well, I've already had some help from AS on this project. Ray Benson very kindly send some manuals, Big T helped out with a couple of p/n's and questions - thanks guys. And looking at some previous AS threads, we think that we've figured out the meanings of some model designations:
064 - standard model, normal wrap
064R - model with full wrap
064W - model with heated handles
064RW - model with heated handles and full wrap
(please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!)
So I thought I should post a thread to update people as I do any work on the saw - or to cry for help if I get stuck!
