It looks like the main purpose of that stack is to provide a mount for the K&N Filtercharger. If you go back to the days of the carbureted race cars and motorcycles (for instance, take a look at a Can-Am car or 60's Formula One engine) you will see stacks that taper open very gradually from the carb throat diameter. It looks like yours starts out bigger than the carb bore and opens up at about 45 degrees, and I just don't see how you could get any reflection of pressure waves back into the intake.

When a couple of Cycle magazine editors raced a Ducati 900SS, I believe Gordon Jennings told them not to use the Dell'Orto carb stacks, but I can't remember why.

A 4 stroke at 6000-7000 rpm needs a 4x longer stack than a 2 stroke at 12,000-14,000 rpm, but I think the taper should look similar.
