2 linden trees so different

how can 2 linden trees be so different, one is a very dirty tree that sheds a lot, and one that never sheds a leaf. Someone told me there is a male & female, is this correct?

I know there are several different kinds of linden, and also several cultivars of each kind. In other words, there may be 20 or 30 different trees that go by the common name of Linden.
