I can't get the one with the plastic bushing to stay together. Do I need to put a nut on the screw?

The outside of the bushing has course threads that are supposed to screw into the inside of the spring. Maybe they are worn out. Get a new bushing.

It was new. Lasted a few hours. It was the inside threads that failed. It was chicom. Maybe oem will last longer.

Maybe you can unscrew the old one if the nylon parts is still good, put that in the new spring and have what you need.

Hi don't know if it matters but the av on the cylinder takes a larger size screw with coarse threads

That might be the problem. I think I used a 5M, I'll try 6M.
