What are the two tapped holes on the front of a 395xp crankcase for? Just noticed them yesterday.

Muffler brace.
They're for letting bar oil run all over the bench when you pull the muffler bracket bolts out

Nothing listed in the IPL either
Its for a protective plate. The part number is 503 93 47-01.

both my 395's have that plate. only thing is a just woke up and am one eye'n it here so don't feel like taking and uploading pics.
You can find it listed in the wrap handle / bar plates section of the IPL . As RedFir stated ,the p/n
Is 503 9347-01 . P/n for the screws is 503 2007-12 . Makes the 395 lean to the right . Sorta like a really big 346 !

what does the plate protect? The front of the crankcase?

yes. that appears to be it's only purpose. i can take a pic in a bit.

here it is. i'm surprised yours doesn't have it cause all the 395's down here are sold with it.

I thought it was used if you broke the spring mount off.
The main purpose of it is to protect the case when bucking. People were breaking pieces off the case there because they were letting the saw slam into a log when making bucking cuts. It actually works quite well.

Both mine are xpw's so that could be why. To tell you the truth i haven't even seen a used 394/395 without a full wrap handle here and even most dealers have the full wrap on them in the show room.
has anyone tried fitting 288xp 7th mount into 395xp ? the protective plate could go along with some minor work
