So, what is the difference between the 440 and 460, that makes the 440 with the 460 p/c better than a 460 due to weight? I kinda thought that being such close saws they'd be identical except the cc's.

The MS440 is 13.9 lbs at 5.4hp
The MS441 is 14.6 lbs at 5.5hp
The MS460 is 14.6 lbs at 6.0hp
That is powerhead weight only from the Stihl book. Not much of a weight difference.

460 or 440

In the Peoples Replubik of Kalifornia, if you are looking at new, it is either a 441 or a 460. I recently bought a new 460, very nice saw. Our local dealer does not stock the 441, but does stock the 460 and recommends them. The California Air Resources Board are to thank for that, along with lots of other things to "help".

The 440 is no better made than the 460. They are both incredible saws. If a 460 is too heavy for limbing, so is a 440. Neither one are really limbing saws, but they'll both do the job. A 440 is nothing to be sneezed at, but the 460 is just that much more of a good thing.
Well said Brad. If one is too heavy, then the other is too heavy.

I don't understand. The 441 is a strato saw, yes? You'd think the CARB would push for stocking the more modern and supposedly "environmentally friendly" of the two saw models instead of the 460. Or maybe I didn't understand what you were saying.

Well, that is the "adjusted" weights that they stated when the 441 was released, and none of them are true (old story)!:laugh:

It is a bit odd that both the 440 and 460 gained weight at the same time that the 441 was introduced (they didn't really), and the 441 weights more than the specs tell you.

Here is an 044, full of fuel and oil, minus the bar and chain.

I guess my question wasn't real clear...I have an act for that, wording makes total sense to me, but in reality it turns out most people don't get from it, what I was meaning. So let me try to explain myself better...Basically what I was curious about is what makes a 440/460 combo weigh less than a stock 460??

It's that way here in MI as well, I just assumed the OP was debating between used saws

Ya know, I've kinda wondered that myself (or something similar)...The saws I've been looking into seem to have odd differences in weight, I don't recall the exact numbers but info I found on the newest version 026 was a significant difference (for just changing the format of the name) weighed less than a 260, as well as 044-440, 046-460, and 066-660. It probably wasn't much difference in weight if you were to pick up a 044 then a 440, but from one year to the next at the changeover of the nameplate, and reading the literature, they were like about a quarter pound different.

The crankcase on the 044/440 is smaller than the 046/460. this is where the weight savings is. The fuel tank and plastic are also different, though some have made them work on the "other" version.

441 In California

StihlyinEly - CARB is pushing the stratified charge saws. For now, however the 460, 660 and 880 are not required to be stratified charge which is one reason I bought the 460 a short time ago. The local Husky and Stihl dealer (one shop) has had not so good experience with loggers using the 441, so they do not recommend it. I know the owners of the local dealer and he said that the stratified charge engines run really lean, and as a result only last about a year in professional use, whereas the 440 and 460 last much longer.

I'll leave it at that.
