I've seen some old Homelites like Gary's, from what I remember about the muffler, there is a screen with a heat shield/diverter covering the whole thing.
A fun thing to do is fire up an old Homelite with just the bare port and watch it run in the dark, way cool.

Yeah I did that when I first bought it. It proves that spark screens really work

Think I have one of those

Gary: I think that is the same saw the I ran for some years. Well I don't mean that exact same saw but one just like it. Now your makin me wade through the snow out to the way back garage and see if I can dig it out. If memory serves it was a pretty good cuttin saw, but pretty heavy. I remember old Johnny O'brien who ran the local saw shop. I came in one day and asked if he had any used saws. This was probably in the early 80's or late 70's. Ol Johnny say's "I been waitin for someone big enough and dumb enough to take this old Hommy of my hands, your sure big enough, and for 50 bucks I'll give it to ya with a tune up, the old chain sharpened, and I got enough of that chain left to make ya 2 more." I said "sold." That old saw and I cut one hell of a lot of wood. If I get it dug out and figure out how to post a picture I'll post it. Boy your causing me a lot of work, that snow out there is deep. Later JR

These are pics of the old Hommy that I used for years. I think that the piston or cylinder is shot, but not sure. When she quit I took it to the shop and ol Johnny said that it would cost more to fix than it was worth, and I don't remember what was wrong. I might tear it down and find out, maybe try to fix it. You can still hear after running that beast? About 10 minutes of running mine and my head is spinning:chainsaw:

Hearing

What did you say? No actually that was the start of me wearing hearing protection. Even before the wire screen fell off, and I couldn't find it, I used those foam ear plugs with the thing. Place where I shot sporting clays had a 5 gallon bucket full of them and I'd grab a hand-full and use them with the chainsaw. If you didn't your ears would ring. That old baby would really cut wood though. JR

JR... nice old saw. One thing mine doesn't have is the buckin'/fallin' dogs on it. Sorry to make ya trudge through the snow ... but I'm glad ya did. Love to see pics of the old Homelites. :)

Tear into it and see what ya find!

Gary
