attaching outdoor lighting

I have a fairly good size live oak next to my deck that I want ti attach some lights to. Is their a recommendation as to the best way to attach. Would small stainless steel screws be out of the question?

A fair sized oak can take a pretty good size screw indeed. Don't be shy, you want the thing to stay up there, right?
