I have read that you don't want to run a brand new saw wide open out of the wood, but at the same time you want to check the RPM's wide open with the Tach.

Do people tune these saws with the chain in the wood and under load, or do they open them up without a load on the chain and check the RPM's that way?

Or maybe you run a tank of gas through it before you attempt to tune it with a tachometer.

Appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

I let a new saw idle for 2-3 minutes tell it gets good and warm. Then take it into a cut lifting for a second to make sure she burbles/ 4 strokes. That way I know it is rich enough. Run 5 or six good hard cuts then I take and tach to make sure I am close. I set it a bit rich for the first 5-10 tanks then check tune. That is how I do every saw we sell. I haven't had any problems yet.
