I live in NYC, and so I'm not familiar with what one does with the debris from tree trimming and removals. I will be doing jobs in Smithtown and Port Jefferson--would I take it to their respective recycling centers?

Well, i live in the country (kind-of) but i just burn mine. Kind of smokey but there's nothing left and with fuel what it is it's the cheapest way i've found to dispose of them.

You can rent a chipper

I just did a hedge that was 12 x 15 x 150'
Took it down to about 4 x 4
Chipper made quick work of the brush. Could've blown into the pickup bed, but HO was going to use chips in flowerbed.

$128.- for 4 hours; was able to handle up to 6" diameter.
