i am pondering porting a little with one of my cheaper saws, and i have played with my ski-doo and other things quite a bit but never a chainsaw
can i use my egt gauge to monitor the temps or is that not a valid way to tune the saw, i just dont want to run it to lean and that is how i test my sled,
thanks

Short answer is: no.

EGT varies with mixture and engine speed; it would be hard to run it long enough in the cut, at a constant speed, for the exhaust and your probe to reach a steady temperature. If you were successful at doing that you'd still have to determine the correlation between EGT and mixture for your particular saw. You can't tune for maximum EGT (as is done with aircraft engines) because peak EGT is at a stoichiometric mixture and that's way too lean for a saw.
