You can burn cutters with a CBN wheel.
Hows it compare to burning cutters with the pink wheel ?

Takes longer to burn them with CBN ?
Takes just as long to burn with CBN ?

Also .......... are you saying that a diamond wheel is more forgiving than a CBN wheel as far as burning cutters ?

ready to pull the plug on one of the two wheels Brad linked, but the manufacturer says "NO WAY" to use a diamond wheel on steel ..............

Alright now which is which before I spend $$$$!!! :dizzy:

Okay, I may be repeating an earlier post, but here goes:
ABN or CBN coated wheels are used for grinding steel/chrome plated steel cutters (standard saw chain). Diamond coated wheels are for grinding carbide cutters (very expensive special saw chain - rare)

Now.....There is a company out there by the name of "Diamond Wheel". They make both CBN coated wheels as well as diamond coated wheels. So some folks may state they are using a "diamond wheel" when they are actually using a CBN coated wheel made by Diamond Wheel, Inc.

Toofriggin late for me ............ just pulled the plug on the CBN

I thought I could get the diamond wheel so I could sharpen carbide also, but lots of steel chains need my grinder to work, and since the diamond wheel is said to be incompatable with steel on every website, it became an obvious choice.

Plus Philbert said so too

I believe all three of these companies make them. They're listed on the Diamond Wheels page. I believe you can find it on the Foley site. I think Radiac rolls have to custom make it.

Please share your impressions of the CBN wheel, compared to your conventional wheels, once you have had a chance to run it for a while, either here, or in a separate thread.

Thanks!

Philbert
Sure thing !!
My largest obstacle is the heat that the pink wheels put into a cutter.
I absolutely refuse to file any chain that was on a grinder, so maybe this CBN wheel can overcome heating up the cutter.

I'll be getting one of the CBN wheels as soon as I collect the funds for it. For now, I have finally cracked the nut on how to keep the cutters cool with my pink wheel. Step 1: Clean the chain with solvent prior to sharpening (this removes dirt and oil that will mess up the pink wheel). Step 2) rough up (sharpen) the wheel with a dressing stone prior to commencing on each chain (dressing stone produces roughness on the wheel surface that has sharp microscopic edges which cut the steel with less force and less heat). Step 3: grind saw chain cutters with short bursts of contact rather than a smooth application of force.
By using these steps in my sharpening process I can avoid overheating cutters and I get a much sharper tooth as well. Main drawback is that it takes me a long time to sharpen a chain. The CBN wheel will speed up my process tremendously!

Even a quick couple of bursts on the pink wheel makes the sap sizzle on the top of the cutter. Its unavoidable unless you rig up coolant (air or water).

I aint talking about turning blue either ............

I ordered two 511AXs during lunch. $289/ea w/free shipping :) I'll be ordering a flat CBN wheel for rakers and a 3/16 CBN wheel for sharpening. I'm still waiting to hear back on a price for a CBN Cyclone before ordering the wheels.
I will be hooking up an air coolant system if the CBN wheel heats up the cutter too much. I thought about the cyclone wheel too, but wondered how durable it would be long term with all of the cutouts
