I picked up a large load of this tree that was just cut down. I was told its a variety of oak but I'm not sure. Could anyone confirm that? Pretty heavy, reasonably easy to split with fiskars but a little stringy, Tx

Doesn't look like oak to me either. I'm not seeing the porous grain common to oak. The white oak I run into tends to be more uniform of color. I'm inclined to agree with unclemoustache. Looks more like some sort of hickory to me.
 
Huh. Well apparently I'm wrong for the first time in my life! o_O When I saw the pictures I thought maple.
 
When I first looked at the pictures, I'm thinking like mn woodcutter and thinking Maple.. The bark looks a little rough for white oak and it has a lot of holes like the bugs were working their way in. At the least I'd say some is Hickory.. It would be interesting to know how well this coals up.
