I was thinking hickory - I'm burning stuff that looks just like this - does it leave a lot of ash and coal up a lot?

Doesn't look like oak to me either. I'm not seeing the porous grain common to oak. The white oak I run into tends to be more uniform of color. I'm inclined to agree with unclemoustache. Looks more like some sort of hickory to me.
I'm voting on the White Oak side. Bark is textbook White Oak. Will tend to be a little stringier than Red Oak
The darker heart tells me hickory.

I've seen White Oak having a dark core also.

Are you looking at one piece in pic 4 causse that could look a little like maple but look at the rays on the endHuh. Well apparently I'm wrong for the first time in my life!

When I first looked at the pictures, I'm thinking like mn woodcutter and thinking Maple.. The bark looks a little rough for white oak and it has a lot of holes like the bugs were working their way in. At the least I'd say some is Hickory.. It would be interesting to know how well this coals up.
