Crimson King Maple w/ yellowish brown scales

I have a crimson king maple (25 ft tall) that has a mixture of white spots and yellowish brown, scaley spots, about the size of a nickle. I've been noticing especially the white spots on other maple trees around the city. I've never seen them before this year.

Any suggestions or comments?
