So I’ve about decided that I want to buy an Echo CS-490. Purpose is for limbing, use around my home when limbs fall off my pecan tree (weight), etc. I’m not doing huge tree cutting or anything like that but my question is would y’all recommend getting the 20” bar or the 18”? I feel like the 18” would be more than sufficient for what I need but am curious if I’d be better off having more than I need in bar length? Thanks.

I like more bar, I'm 6' and a 24" bar on my 362 keeps me standing up instead of bending. My 20" bar on the same saw forces me to get lower than is comfortable when bucking.
The shorter bar is nice for control, and doesn't stick out as far (rocks/kickback) I keep it for in the bucket truck.

I like to have two bars per saw, in case I get one pinched.

I have a 20" for more reach when limbing or cleaning trails to save my back at 6'3". I don't think the 490 echo would handle this length well buried in oak all day if that is what you need.

I also have a 16" for bucking rounds or cutting in and upright position. The shorter length helps keep the rpms up in this size saw. Once the wood is more than 12-16" in diameter I start looking for my bigger saw.

if I only had one it would be an 20 on the saw you mentioned because most of what I cut would be small enough to not overload the saw even with the extra bar length.

If your still looking i have 2 new 20 inch bars for that saw...never used sitting on my shelf for a year...
