i cut a 32 inch ash today,my face cut was a little to big. maybe 35to 40 %,i left 20% for the hinge then pulled the tree a few degrees with the truck.then cut 10 % more ,then the wedge fell out.then pulled it over with the truck.what is to much for a face cut. kp

You should be ok with as little as 10% hinge wood. One advantage to a deep face cut is that the hinge will be longer - making it stronger in spite of being thinner.

In fact, when a trunk is unhealthy it is a good idea to sink the face cut deeper so that you can get a wider hinge.

The most important aspect of a face cut is that it should not close until the tree is nearly all the way down since once the hinge breaks you have lost control of the tree.
