I also posted this on the MILL section. I bought a new
STILH MS 460 MAGUM today. This is the biggest saw I have ever
put to wood. HOLY COW it will cut compared to my 036, it is smoother
in my hands, and easier on my hand & arm to start with the decompression
valve. I bought it with the 25 inch replaceable tip bar. My wife and I have
160 acres about 110 acres open and the rest in woods. When we bought
the farm I worked at a Tool & Die and Special Machine shop. Had to work
lots of over time and did not have time to cut firewood. I now work for DOD
as a Small Arms Inspector/Repairman. So no more overtime and with the price
of propane (OR EVEY THING ELSE) we are going to have an outside wood
furnace put in. I had to give $760.00 for the saw. Would like to know how
much they are selling for other places. Ok I need to get back to breaking
in the saw I thought I would put about ten tanks through it before try
to mill with it. One or two more things. The instruction manual says nothing
about breaking in the saw that I could find. For you experienced guys, is there any break in tips that you can give me? I know not to run it full throttle under no load but does it hurt to run it full throttle under load? And is there a non magnum 460? If there is what the difference?


Guys I apologize for my grammar. I’m pretty strong @ mechanical stuff and math.
And if it wasn’t for spell check I would not even try to post anything.

And about ½ tank in the Stihl HT 100 pole saw. That was all I wanted for today.

Though I’m man enough to put a gallon of gas through my 335xpt in 7 hrs
Last Saturday cutting limbs of cedars:hmm3grin2orange: The pole saw is
what really gets to my arms. But you can take down some limbs in a hurry.
Oh and I used the 460 on a big red oak the wind had blown over in early
spring. I wear ear plugs but man I love the sound of this saw.

I think I will sell my 036.
But I may go for a FS 350 Brush-cutter/Clearing Saw.
Before the 260. Guys I'M like a goose I wake up in
a new world every day.

Sounds like your having a ball with that new saw, its a goodie for sure. You asked about any tips for breaking it in. The best two would be keep the chain sharp and open it wide open only when its in the cut. Other than that let it rip. I got the older version of that saw, the 046 and as you , I love the way that saw performs...

That is my combo

The 260Pro, and a MS460. Better together.
The 260 is the perfect limbing machine. But will handle some larger cuts. I run it with 18" and full skip 3/8.

The 460 is the heavy hitter. Sometimes full comp, sometimes full skip.
I am also not tough enough to run a full day on the 460.

I'd keep the 036 as well - can never have too many good saws! If you have your 460 on a mill, it nice to have another decent sized saw to buck and prep the mill logs.

prices on the 460 yesterday. One of the places I called said that
someone had brought in a 066 that was locked up and bought a new
saw and give them the 066. The saw mechanic put a new jug and piston
in it and took it home. The mechanic is now a little short on money and
wants to sell it. But he won't be back until Sept. 26. So I will find out
then how much it is then. On buying a used 066 what should I look for
and what questions should I ask? Is there junk jugs & pistons (Brands)
to stay away from?

Can anyone tell me if Stihl made a MS 460 & MS 460 magnum?
And what the difference is between the two saws are?
The only place in the manual that it makes notice of something
different is when it is talking about the muffler

Hey my BIG :hmm3grin2orange: went away and went to :jawdrop:
for about 3 seconds. I was cutting the trunk of the tree working
from the top to the bottom. Was about 30 feet from the bottom
it is 18 to 20 inches in dia at this point and nice and solid. Well
making the next cut about 1/2 way the saw felt different and then
it blew CHAIN OIL EVERY WHERE! so I thought. IT was WATER!
I had to laugh out loud. This old tree it laying down hill and the
hollow part had filled with water I bet 5 gallons came out.
I just Knew the saw case had busted and blow-en all the chain
oil out. After the second tank of gas had to slow the idle down
some it was starting to turn the chain at idle. and that was after
I took the slack out of the chain. It seems to be making a little
more power.

A standing tree, when hollow and filled with water, will literally explode if it is struck by lightning as the water is turned into steam in a fraction of a second.

Something else to worry about. I have no idea if there is any truth o this, considring the source. I had a guy tell me that water would dull a chain faster than hitting the dirt? Have no idea how that would be, but I have seen a lot stranger things lately!!

If the piston and cylinder that were put on the 066 are genuine Stihl, you won't have a problem. If "other" brands, you take your chances. I'd actually be more concerned with the piston than the cylinder. Did he put a new cylinder on the saw or just he the old one? Ask him for a reasonable warranty, like 30 days etc..

The 460 magnum has the dual port muffler.

Andy,The water did'nt seem to hurt the chain.

Lakeside, I looked at the muffler in the front right side it has
a small slit running vertical and behind that it has what looks
to be a 5/16 Dia. hole for the exhaust. Is the duel port on the
inside? My 036 has what looks to be between 5/8 to 3/4 Dia. port.

I hauled a stick of wood to the house and just wanted to see if
I could post pics.

Fired up 036 and run it some. It sounds like a small block with
a big cam & headers. The 460 sounds like a big block with a
quite muffler system on it.

Also wanted to post one more picture. This is one tree that needs to
come down. I tore out the old fence and I have to put up a new fence.
It's so old I hate to cut it down. And It's big enough that it scares me to try.
The limbs are as big as most trees. I know there a lot bigger trees out
there but around here this is a good size tree. If I leave it one of those
limbs will fall on my fence and destroy it then the cattle will be out.

I like this site I know the new will wear off it and the new saw.
But right now it's fun!

The 460 magnum has the dual port muffler.

Huh? My 460 mangum came with standard muffler cover, I bought the dual-port and installed myself.

Also, on the IPL drawing, it appears to indicate that the muffler cover gasket is only used in the standard (colsed) cover, not so with the dual-port. This a goofy drawing, goofy interpretation, or goofy sepcification?
