What is this? I think the tree is a maple and a somewhat large branch just split off.

Mites. Not the reason the limb failed. Usually only causing cosmetic damage. No control necessary.

Thanks. I plan on having this tree removed along with the magnolia and two pine trees to make room for a pole barn...eventually...so I wasn't too concerned about it. Any ideas about the last photo?

For whatever reason, I didn't think maples had flowers.
