I'm considering some sort of box wedge for my splitter, and I didn't know if anyone had experience with making weges out of 1/2" thick steel. They would only be about four inches high, but the thinner they are, the less binding there will be. Is this too thin?

...maybe...

I have made wedges out of all kinds of stuff. My current theory is that grader blade is hard to beat. 1 inch thick, and some decent steel.
I have made some "extensions" to the blades with 1/2" stuff to avoid excessive grinding. It almost works. Side forces tend to bend the thinner stuff.

However! Leaf springs is excellent steel!!! You can make a blade out of that stuff and except where you weld it in (draws temper) is perfect for thinner blades. Use the really heavy flat overload
