Maybe try taking the piston back off the rod and try it off the saw, that way you can get the hang of it.

I took the rings off and swapped them and then wasn’t even able to get the top ring in.
I tried that once -- 0nly once. The piston pin, the needle cage, the C-clip snap rings, and the crankshaft collectively sealed my doom with the cylinder on board to keep them company.Sometimes it's easier to put the piston in the cylinder without the rod attached.
