Right the guy said the tank/ handle was swapped from a broken 440 , they took the good one from this 460 and put it on the running 440

It has the MS-460 oil pump, which would be impossible to mount on a MS-440 crankcase, so I think what you have there is pretty much as described - a 460 crankcase/long block
with a 440 tank/air box/filter base & flange/filter cover/handlebar.

If you look closely, the muffler is a 460 muffler as well.

Looks like a 460 case with a 440 tank.

Need to see Case above oiler inlet, but the oil pump is 460. 440 had vertical bolts IIRC. If you pull the pump and there is a springclip on the crank, it’s 460.

Fins under the cover appear 460.

If the piston isn’t any good, looking through ex port, I’d tell the guy to keep the saw or offer $25 for it. You’re looking at the potential for more in parts than buying a runner. A project is fun, but knowing you paid twice what it’s worth at the end of it takes some of the luster away.

Well I got the saw today , I only pick up at this farm every other day so I had to wait till today . The square corner on the case behind the chain brake told me 460 , when I called and talked to stihl with the serial number she confirmed it's a 460 and was made around April 2004 , or the order to build the saw lot was put in then she said . I'll degrease it all tommorow and I'm gonna pressure test and vac test it before I tear anything apart . I did however take the muffler off and looked inside and the piston I thought looked fine , the cylinder looks like there are some scratches near one of the sides in the back . I'll post more photos once I get into it . Thanks
I got it for $130.00

Just pop the flywheel off which is very easy with the tool and if it says 044 on the cylinder it is a Ms440 and if it says 046 it is a MS460 case closed. I am about sure it is a MS460 as the back handle is to narrow which is how a MS440 handle looks on a MS460.

Well I popped the muffler off , the piston doesnt look horrible or near as bad as I was expecting , but the back of the cylinder bas me a little concerned , do you think those are scratches on the cylinder wall or aluminum smears ? I will take it apart I just wanted to pressure and vac test it first tommorow

That's the best compression I could get with wrapping the pull cord around a screwdriver and pulling , not the easiest on the hand till I get a new handle

Looks like it ate some sawdust. I'd get a meteor on order now, and research cleaning up that cylinder. You may just need a red scotch brite pad. You could probably run it a while like it is but if you're going to pull the jug you may as well freshen it up.

Yeah I would not run it as is just for fear of doing more damage . I cleaned up my stihl 066 cylinder with muratic acid and that worked great , I just cant tell if this is smears on there or like scratches you would feel with a finger nail .

If you don’t do a full rebuild you are throwing good money after bad. Just my opinion.

There is a carbon smear on the piston and that back wall, though it can be deceiving from oil smears, it just don’t look right.

Sounds like you are upstate. Many good members that could help you out if needed.

Your looking at meteor piston $40
OEM PTO bearing $25
Fly Bearing- any C3 rated 6202 $5-10
OEM case gasket set with seals $30

Does your compression tester have a Shrader valve at the end of it? If not, you’ll get a false low reading.

Depending on your elevation, an 046/460 is a higher compression saw than most from the factory. Most older saws are around 155-160 ASL from Stihl, but the 460 usually come in around 175 stock for me.

No place on any 1128 cylinder will it say “440” or “460”.

Mahle jugs will say the mm size on the side. 50 is 044 and 52 046. Usually preceded by prefix “ZN”.

If you pull the starter, the 460/046 will also have the poly flywheel.

Plus it’s usually on the clutch side and hidden if flywheel pulled anyway.
