What's wrong with this tree?

Picture:

This tree is still in a pot, raised from a small seedling, it's a couple years old. It was fine until 2-3 months ago when parts started to turn brown. We replanted from the pot seen in that picture to a larger one, which seemed to make it better for a couple weeks, then it got worse again. That picture is at least a month or so old, over half of the tree is brown now.

I'm not an arborist, but planted 100 GS 25 years ago in the back yard and all are fine, a couple are near 60 ft tall already (except the ones used for Christmas trees - they don't wilt at all in the house over a month even)

Suspect you answered your own question -- 2 years old and still in the pot!

Your best bet is to check for girdling roots
Go to isa-arbor.com to learn more
Buy the Great Western Garden Book (check Costco)
Go to your local nursery for more info on girdling as well
You say your from the East Bay?
Ask yourself where do these trees grow and thrive. Have you taken this tree from it's natural environment?
Due diligence will help you alot with this...

I think Mike's point is right!
Over watering is a huge issue with potted plants.
What kind of pot is it in?
Careful not to jump pot size to quick or to large.
This will cause overwatering big time.
Prior to this die back happening did you change to a larger pot or did you up the watering schedule?
Later
