I have a thermometer on the stove pipe but I never paid much attention to it. I have an OWB now so the Hotblast is just backup and hasn't been used in 7 years. Most of us have used a grinder and ground the bumps off the back of the air knobs so that we can screw then down tight and cut the fire right back. This reduces your wood consumption. Use dry dry wood and load it according to your heat needs. And they use a lot of wood but really what do you expect for the price point? My wife doesn't work in the winter so she could put wood in it as needed. Overnights burns were possible depending on temps outside and wind speed.
