I picked up a Olathe 986 chipper with a 6 cylinder ford gas engine and have been just going over it and evaluating what needs fixing. The basics work pretty well, I sharpened the two knives and used it for four hours without an issue.

Question: does anyone know how these hour meters work, are they fixable or do I just replace it ?

I would go with digital meter.

Replaced the hour meter with the same OEM meter on a different brand chipper. It did not last very long, I assume from machine vibration.

They just hook up to keyed 12v power, So when the key is on they are running, When its off it stops, And they will stop working from time to time, You jot down the old reading in a service log and then start with the replacement. Don't always believe an hour meter when buying something, Especially if it's old.
