If stacking, use a piece of rebar equal to the 3 pieces. If it's end to end, simply bend the rebar into a square "u" shape. Drill 7/16" holes and pound the rebar in like giant nails. Scarf joints or even dove tails would be nice, but become labor intensive rather quickly.
