Hydraulic question

Is a 5 gallon resevoir sufficient for a splitter with a 4x24 ram and a 16gpm pump? I see a good amount of people using 8, 10, and up for resevoirs. What would be the benefit of 10 gallon opposed to 5 gallon?

Unless you're really going gangbusters with the splitting it would probably be alright.
The rule of thumb that I heard long ago, and have used every since is, 1 gallon tank capacity for every gpm of flow.
The benefit of running a bigger tank (10 gal. vs. 5 gal.) would be cooler oil. The more oil you're circulating, the longer it takes to heat the entire tank capacity.
Any time your oil gets over 180 degrees F. you're shaving life off of your hydraulic system (especially the pump). I try to keep the temps on my stuff below 140.

Cooler oil was a given. I did NOT know that those temps would have that great of an effect. Makes sense I suppose.
