So was I. Guess was I predisposed against hitchhikers because when I was young a family friend was killed by one he picked up. Just became a rule that I wouldn't pick them up.

Good to hear a good story. Just the fact that he didn't want to take the extra $20 means he was a guy that could truly use the help.

Yes, I left my wallet in the truck, and I checked it before I dropped him off. All well, and none of my tools missing. I don't know if he noticed the 9mm I was packing. Had it in my toolbelt while working, and in my pocket when not. I wasn't taking any chances, so I'm very glad he turned out to be such a neat guy.

...forums...don't ya just love them. It's a place where people can come to say anything they want within forum rules...and even when a negative poster can be over the line for some time before mods rein them in.

So far this thread has 183 likes..most are doled out to the positive posters.Herein lies the 1st clue to the bashers of Avalancher....your B.S. is what it is...B.S.

There's one thing I know...every single one of us are human. I also know humans are not perfect and are subject to making mistakes. To judge someones actions are one thing but to judge the motive is another. Actually...judge ye lest you be judged. Who will throw the 1st stone...None of are sinless and none of us have the right to pass on negative blame onto others.

I've got a story...have you ever heard of the "Sheep & the Goat"

There was this guy I met once while attending the Nationals in Indy (drag racing) along with my son who had been a virgin to drag racing..never saw a car go over 300 mph in the 1/4 mile before...nor had he ever felt the shake of the ground standing directly behind a nitro/gas dragster as they burped the motor.
Well this guy was at the motel we were staying...his wife was gone to some food shelf so the story goes...anyway he was looking pretty needy. He asked to borrow a few buck for a day until he got paid from a job he had done for a roofing co. Well it was only 50$ and I was loaded at the time...no not drunk ,but monetarily speaking. Come to find out on the next day that his room was empty.
They had skipped town over night. I over heard the mgr. saying that they had owed a few thousand dollars....the way it worked out is that I helped finance their escape.

You see it is not for me to judge....I am mandated by my belief in the Holy Spirit to help when called.
Who knows what ever the outcome was for these folks.I do not know the plan that has been laid before me. I sure as heck can tell you what HIS plan is not from my past failure in being in control and driving into the proverbial ditch.
Again we are human and prone to mistakes...these mistakes do not have to define who we are or what the mission "really" is.

I know how you feel. The storms that hit SMithville MS is about 55 miles from here. I went with a friends church group as ours still didnt decide what to do. THey provided the truck and trailer and a dump truck. I supplied my skid steer and buckets and forks with grapple. We were doing several loads of brush an hour. THe state was poicking up debris so we just got it to the ROW. As we were working the folks inside were lending a bit of a hand and their neighbors were busting hump. Got about 1/4th of the way through and the livin man came in. He had a check seems that an anonamous person donated 150 000 to help out. About 1000 each damaged home. THose folks came out dressed to the 9's and left us mid clean up headed for the casino in tunica.

We loaded up and went across to the neighbors that were helping us and got theyr place cleaned up.

Funny. Part of our help in the flood cleanup was so the flood victims COULD GET AWAY FOR A WHILE. They were in shock. Their area had never, in written historical times flooded. They needed to get away, get some sleep, even go to a casino and forget about it for a while if they wanted to.

We did not expect any help from the home owners. They'd been through hell. One woman had floated for hours inside her house, and almost died from hypothermia. Our floods are in the winter. One house we worked on had just been remodeled prior to the flood. The lower floor was ruined.

For those of you who expect people who have been traumatized to help out, after they've been without power and water and nescessities of life, well maybe you should just stay at home and watch the news and make judgements of the people affected.

And I'm the non christian??? Oh, and I'm fat, too.

Some of you can quote the bible all you want in her defense, but there's plenty more in the good book that goes against her. She was rude, crude, ignorant, thoughtless, greedy, insensitive, self-centered, etc, etc, etc. Add whatever 7 deadly sin you wish to add. Around these parts, if someone gives you a hand and helps out, you extend gratitude and do the same in return when they're in need. She needs mental health, not supporters for her lazy crutch. Yes, I have been in the wine.

Err, my post was defending Avalancher for doing the right thing in the face of someone who did him wrong. The one to be judged was the one who took advantage at every turn of his good works. I think the wine clouded your vision.

It's a test .
I don't think we were meant to pass all tests thrown at us , we are only human .
If we passed them all , well we'd be ......

As far as the rest of the group not understanding your concerns they may be just wrapped up in the "noble" cause and can't see the forest for the trees or they might just be great followers and still can't see the forest for the trees , who knows .

You've done your bit , move on to the next that is in need or wait for it to come but I'm sure you'll step up to the plate and do you're part and who knows what adventures it will lead you to .

Just my 2¢ , your mileage may vary and we now resume regular programming .

Wow AV! lol, I know what you mean.. when I was in the churches youth group, we went on a service project to Chitcago to help fix up their houses for them. You know because they weren't "able" to do so. Ya right! We busted our hump for 2 day re-roofing and fixing porches and whatever else, while they sat their asses inside watching cable tv in the a/c! At 14 I learned a lesson, don't help anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LMAO! That did happen but we should help one another.
Just I will never be in a big city fixing up the projects again! I would much rather do that locally.
I thought that the whole thing was just being taken advantage of...
Some people are just scammers:msp_mad::msp_thumbdn:

Keep up the good work AV, they are just more stories for your books!

ok, I got another story from today. Some 20-something guy knocked on my door on Friday, asking for work, so I gave him a shovel to dig some grass to build forms to put in a sidewalk. He did really well, worked hard, didn't mind the heat. Next day he even showed up on time, and I thought I had a good one on my hands. Turned out to be a fluke. He quickly started working less and less, and smoking more and more. Showed up late after lunch, and today he was to show up at 10:00 - that's when the cement truck was to arrive. I needed him right then, but he didn't show up until after the truck was finished cleaning out. Fortunately I've been down that road before, so I brought my 11 y.o. along.
Anyway, he was in hard straits, so I had him do some more digging, and then some painting. He did a lousy job on that, so I decided that was the end of it. He called tonight, said his fiance was in jail, and he needed $110 to get her out. I told him he earned $50 today. He asked if there was anything he could do tomorrow, so I agreed to pay him $80 if he finished the painting - about 3 hours. He asked for $90, and I agreed. He showed up at my door, and I gave him a check. He wanted to bail her out tonight, so he wanted cash. So I scraped some together and ripped up the check. Now he owes me 3 hours of labor, doing a job which he does badly, and he's begging me for more work after that.
Well, I'll finish our agreement with the painting, but after that it's 'no' from here on. I tried to help, but he smokes his money away, and his lady just bought him a pair of $90 sunglasses.
Sure, I got hosed on this one, and I'm sure he'll pester me for a few days until he realizes I'm not going to hire him again. I'll just forget about this one and remember the last one.

Ahh, humanity. You mortals can really stink sometimes! :alien2: Grow a moustache and save the planet. :D

Hey Avalancher,

You did at least get a bit of firewood, right?

How did the paint chipping go last weekend?

Firewood? There wasnt any, it was mostly brush. As far as paint chipping goes, it looked pretty good as i drove by yesterday. They did a good job on the place, and made me even more glad that I moved on to greener pastures.I hate chipping paint, I did my fair share back in the Navy.....never again.

As of Sunday, I flat out declared that from now on I run the show if an event requires a chainsaw, and I decide if a charitable effort will be made to any individual if it requires any powered equipment residing in my stable.Other than that, they can go and do what ever the please, but count me out.I got enough on my plate without adding any more grief. Some of those folks just seem to have no judgement what so ever in picking candidates. One of the recipients of the "food delivery for the shut ins" last week had a year old Escalade parked in the driveway. If you can afford that SUV, you dont need food delivered to your house.I drove right on by and gave a double dinner to the next grandma.

Must have been a deck ape....got a gallon of water line or did you ever get a BT punch...?LOL

I was on the USS Talbot FFG-4...out of Mayport Fl.

Did you ever become a shellback...we did the Med cruises.

nope, no deck ape, I lived below the waterline as a machinist Mate. Even engine rooms need a fresh coat of paint, and our chief believed even second class petty officers needed to chip paint once in awhile.

Served onboard the USS Coral Sea, CV-43 most of my enlistment out of Norfolk Naval Base, earned my shell back in 1987 and did two Med Cruises. When did you serve?

Good for you. Too much charity is done completely without thought.

In 80-86.I'll never forget when I 1st arrived on board I was asked to go get a bt punch...figured the BT's would know what that was...went down to ask....they laughed and then an ape about 7 foot tall and all of 300 lbs comes over and drills me in the arm.Yup black and blue for a month...after I picked myself off of the deck and cleaned myself in the head I went back to my birthing compartment to find them all laughing pretty hard...yup rookie mistake!

I was an HT on the U.S.S. Vancouver from '88-'92 did 3 wes-pacs and went to Desert shield/Desert Storm on her.

Avalancher, God rewards us for our good deeds, so don't worry about people who aren't thankful for your help, just be thankful you are able to help them.

Exactly. Sure seems like you were the only one involved who could handle that decision-making process. I'll bet they had no idea what it would take to do the jobs (cutting) safely, nor when it was time to stop/quit for safety reasons. And, good-on-yer for having had no ER visits. :msp_thumbup:

Lots of the "haves" and "have-mores" just want more. :msp_ohmy:
