Picked up a Century wood insert for the fireplace and have a few questions regarding installation. The existing fireplace flue is 11'' x 11'' and approximately 22' from the top to where I will be connecting to the insert. The damper throat is rectangular with a 6" width, with the plate removed. The insert vent is 6" diameter. I was planning on running 6" SS flex liner to the top of the chimney, but am worried about getting the liner through the damper throat. I have considered purchasing the round to oval (last 5' of liner lenght is ovalized - as referenced here: http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=146515
I have also considered just ovalizing the end of a round liner myself with a 2x4. I do not want to cut/grind the damper opening as I am renting the home. Any thoughts on which way to go?
The stock faceplate options will not fit the opening of the firebox properly either. From what I have read the faceplates are primarily decorative anyway, as long as the damper opening is sealed with a block off plate. Instead of using a block off plate, could I just install some high-temp insulation in the remaining portion of the damper opening?
Thanks,
Gary
