Log Splitter REbuild

This is the Homebuilt splitter i picked up for 300 bucks this fall, 9 hp robin motor, 4in cylinder and two stage pump. Cylinder leaked like like crazzy, but split 6 cords of wood with out missing a beat.

After some use i new i need to make some changes, first was the hight, it killed my back being bent over running the splitter. I also wanted to be able to back into the pile and the 175 pounds of tung weight was not fun

I also new that i need a table of some sort, then i started having fun cup holder, chainsaw vice for chains, poor mans adjustable detent valve

Looks like the welder won't get quite hot enough for some of the welding. But what you're doing really looks good. I like the tongue. Super job.

Split for about an hour today, everything worked great and was fun to use. Really like the stop that kee the m fROM returning all the way, it saves some time

I am about to redo my wedge and have a few questions. I order a 1" x 6" x 12" tall wedge and plan on doing a new base plate that is 8" long and has more bolts.(i keep bending bolts on the part that rides on the beam)My question is if there is going to be to much stress on the base plate since I am mounting the cylinder on the bottom third of the wedge? I can cut the wedge down but really like the idea of the taller wedge. Raising the cylinder is out of the question right now.

That is an awful lot of force going to the bottom. To me, it looks like your plate for the wedge is too small as well. I guess it would also depend on the type of wood you are splitting. Nasties I'm afraid will break something rather quicker. As you stated, centered is normally best. Bottom line is you will have more wedge than beam in my eyes. Like your upgrades.

I mostly cut fir and alder(both split pretty easy). I think I am going to cut an 1 1/4 out of the wedge down 5 inches. Make a 2 stage splitting wedge, if that makes sence. It should help with the force by making the lower section start to split then the upper section comes into play. The new plate is 8 inches long, that is as long as I can make it without a full rebuild of the entire splitter.
