I pickup the 028 today after work, dumped out the old gas,
it took about 10 pulls to get it running. It was way rich, tached
around 10,000 rpm, reset rpm to just over 12,000 rpm. It started
one pull every time, let it sit about 15 mins, one pull and started.

I have read a lot of the old 028 threads, but did'nt have much luck
finding what I wan't to know. There is a clutch drum kit for the 028
how can I tell if it has had it done or not? It is set up with a
.325 spur sprocket, I want to run .375 spur or rim, would rather
have the rim though. I also took the oil pump cover off, it had
a couple tea spoons of old looking oil in there is this normal?
I have not traded for it yet, owner said to take it home for a
few days and see what I think of it. So if it needs the $50 or $60
kit it mite swing the deal the other way.

Trigger the .375 might be a little ambitious for a 028. I tried it on an 029, I know I know, and it really didn't work at all. Bout all you could do is hold the throttle any more weight than that and it would fall off.

I like the .375 chain. It dose well on the 026 with 16" B/C. I keep the
chain sharp, and let it do the cutting if I need to cut faster, out comes
a bigger saw :)

My oil pump cover looks like the one in the pic named "mine"
I would say the other one is the newer type, is that right?

yours is the newer type.

The WB did not have a chain brake (just the handle).

The AV has a chain brake, and a metal or Plastic tank.

The Super has a plastic tank, only electronic ignition, has a larger bore and a domed piston. Take the plug out and look inside - if the piston is flat, it's one of the first two.. if it has distinct center-dome, it's the super.

A little oil is normal. If it is a spur, it has not been updated to the "kit". which is rim only. Oregon makes a cheaper 3/8 upgrade drum etc.

Stihl's update comes with new oil pump (clutch) cover?

Trigger, I sure am glad you post this. I'm learning a lot by your questions and all the answers coming from those in-the-know.

So, I guess it's hard to tell a super from the others unless you check the ignition and the piston.

disandat, It looks like the 028 had many faces, and I'm still trying
to learn them, and it seems that all of the cylinder covers will
interchange, so some one could put a 028 super cover on a
028WB and try to pass it off as a super (very, very low down IMO)
But as lake said, pull the plug out and look for the dome piston.
There has been people saying how heavy the 028 is, I would think
the heaver models had the metal gas tanks.

This is what models I have come up with, can someone tell us if
there is more models? or is this to many models? the last four models
numbers came out of service manual 028 87-07
028 WB, 028 AVWB, 028 AVE, 028 AVSEQ, 028 AVSEQW, 028 WBSEQ

That's more models than a 2007 Chevy Silverado 2500

Mine still hasn't come in the mail. I should get it tuesday. First thing I'm going to do is pull the plug and then the exhaust...hmmm...maybe the exhaust and then the plug. If the piston is no good, it doesn't matter anymore anyway.

I will be waiting to hear how it is.

Wow, that's a good price. Saw one on e-bay for $175.

Your saw looks pretty nice.

Here are the pics of the saw I have coming in the mail.

Hope the inside looks as good as the outside. The oiler plate thingy looks pretty...well...burnt and oily or just painted black...hope that's all it is and not a sign for something more interesting. Oh, I didn't pay $300 for it. Looks like it was a rental...hope that't not going to haunt me.

Did you ever find a manual for the 028??
