The local pawn shop has a very gently used 461 wearing a 32" bar and chain. He's asking $1000 for it. Assuming that it starts, runs, idles, oils and that the piston looks good when I pull the muffler, is that a fair price or should I be looking elsewhere?

Pawn shop probably bought it for $500, so they want to double their investment. Offer them $750.
