Saw a weird thing today. While at a local church fund raiser, I happened to look up at a big maple tree and see two of its main trunks tied together by a steel cable. This was about 30 ft up in the tree. The caple is barely visible, top 1/3 of pic.
 
I used to do some work at a 300+ year old house whose access lane was lined with 100 yr. old sugar maples. One of the specimines closest to the rear ell of the farmhouse was bound together like an accident victim in traction.
 
Can't really tell from the picture that well, but it looks like a dynamic cobra cable that has been installed to tightly, or the tree has moved since the install...

Dynamic cabling is more popular inEurope, but is starting to be done mroe often around these parts. Steel cabling has been done for decades.
