I have two sugar maples about 9 years old in the front yard, mostly sun. I noticed on one of the trees on the trunk, lines going up and down the length of the trunk. The only way I can think to explain it, is as if the tree has grown the bark is bursting. There are several of these lines where they bark split. Is this a cause for concern?

It could be a fissure caused by an old ingury or a girdling root.
