I have a rancher 55 and will be buying another saw soon. Would like to know what would be a good step up from the 55 w/18" bar. I was think about a 357xp w/24" bar (about $680.00). Would this be a good choice?

RAF,

The old 55 weighs in about the same as the 372XP, and can be found for around 750-800 bucks new, if you shop around.
LOTS more power in a weight you are used to, and if you tinker, there's a ticked off Genie in the things waiting to be uncorked.

Nothing wrong with the 357, it just costs much more than the Stihl MS361 and loses bang for the buck in comparison, and if it bugs you like it does some, the 357 has the outboard clutch.

The MS361 is bang for the buck the hands down alpha dog in it's class.
At least for now, and it's less weight, and more power than the old 55.

Best of luck to ya!

I hate to bog down, big chips rule

My old antique 61 I run a 16" bar to buck firewood.

357xp w/24" bar is too much bar and chain drag...16" is best

If you need the 24" length take the advice and jump to the 372xp

I have a 262XP, which is considered a very good saw, and probably has as much or more power than a 357XP, not sure?

In any case, it's an 18" bar saw, 3/8" full chisel chain, absolutely unstoppable with this set-up. 20" would simply be OK, and it would NOT be well suited to a 24" bar.

Get the 372XP if you stick with a Husqvarna, it will pull a 24" bar with some authority, but really shines with an 18 or 20......IMHO.....Cliff

In that 357xps are so $$, I would look for a deal on a 372xp. Unless you're set to by a lighter saw, and the dealer is willing to deal a bit. The 372xp does have the inboard clutch.

I will have to do a search on the inboard and outboard clutch info. I'll check out the sthil saws. The info I looked up last night show the MS361 has more power and is about $100.00 less. I just looked up the 372xp and I like what I see. I love MORE POWER. Heres the deal. I have been getting alot of big stuff (36" and bigger across) from a guy that dosen't want to deal with it. The 55 does the job but I feel Its to much over a long period of time for the saw. More power to Be able to run a longer bar some times will help to.

Thanks for the info.
Rich

If you're tired of bucking up three footers with a 55 Husky, get a Dolmar PS-7900 or, if it has to be orange, a 372/576.

A 357/359/MS361 would do the job (heck, your 55 is doing the job now) but I think you'd want more power.

The 357 isn't enough of a step up in cc's imo but if you were considering that size sticking with a husky will let you share bars between your saws. You'll notice the performance difference but moving up to the 372 makes more sense to me if you're planning on keeping the 55. Of course that will end the bar sharing as the 372 uses a different mount.

the 455 is pig, 357 359 have more power weigh less, youd never use your 455 if you got one of these.

i ran a 24" bar on my 359 when it was muffler modded no other mods and pulled the 24" chain very well. and the 359 is only rated at 3.9 hp 357 is rated at 4.4 wich is also about identical to 361. inboard clutch would be nice but realy i dont think it matters.

361 i just dislike because everone here likes them so much , they must just be realy good saw or something.

if in your shoes i would get a 372 or 460. posibbly a 660 to run 32" bar then later on down the rd after you have your bigger saw maybe get a 357 359 361 260 to replace the 455

True, except the 357/359 actually weights at least as much as the 455 - but of course they are much better saws.

357 359 are 12.1 lbs 455 is 12.8 just a tad lighter better handling much smoother saws and more power

455 has 3.5 horse 359 has 3.9 357 has 4.4.

Troll,

I put both the 372XP w/20" bar and a 455 w/18" bar on the Shipping scale at my dealer. 1.1lb more for the 372. Close enough for me to call about the same. That little detail pushed me to purchase the 372 and I remember it well.

Powerheads might be a different matter though, but then who runs around the woods without a bar and chain on thier saw? LOL!!

Stay safe!

The 357 and 359 are about 12.9 lbs in the real world, specs are way off after the case was beefed up shortly after introduction (likely was off before that as well)......

yeah i guesm so though i have weigh the dry 359 powerhead i feel husky is spot on with there weight figures.

but in all honesty a lb real isnt noticable and she weighs right at 16 with the 20 bar and chain or was it 16.5 ohhhhh that was both tanks full of fuel.

either way the 372 is very light for its power and so is the 460
