Geez Aaron, talk about derailing a thread. Now you know how I felt over in Homelites talking about weak engined tractors.

Now how is it that when I get crapped on by Mike for politely expressing my opinion in a civil discussion with Mark (who along with other fellows here remained civil, unlike a couple other guys), I get accused of derailing a thread, and am told to "not let the big green door hit me in the ass" on my way out of the Poulan thread?

I thought the Poulan thread was free of the biggoted, closed-minded blind brand cheerleader crap (unliike much of the regular CS section). Also thought it was a place for civil discussion without being bashed for having differing opionions. I was under the impression that this thread was similar to the Homelite, Pioneer, Partner, and McCulloch threads.

I guess I was wrong. Heaven forbid..........I didn't fall upon my knees and kiss the ground before the sainted Poulan 8500 like everyone else. I do still like the Poulan 306/245's, XXV's, 3400-4000's, and 4200/5200's, and all other OLD Poulans including the 8500's though......

Getting ready to put my S25DA back together pretty soon, but while I have it apart....are there any performance gains to be had via muffler mods, light porting, delete cylinder gasket (squish), or should I just leave it alone.

In stock form the venerable S25 is no slouch....and I am happy with it "as is", but wondering if anyone has tinkered with them.

I have run mine plenty...but never worked on one prior to this.

Opinions?

I did open the muffler on one of my S25's and it screams. However its pretty loud too. I simply enlarged the baffle holes and the holes on the cover. How about a test. I'll send you my muffler and you can test yours and mine to see if there are any real gains or is the increased noise making it seem stronger. Then you can return my muffler.

Nik, you hit the nail on the head. I think the issue has been overblown at this time. I don't think any of the parties involved meant to get carried away but that's what happened. Its a shame, as I hate to see people get so worked up over a chainsaw. Hell, I'm not an expert, far from it, but I feel Homelites, McCullough's(sp), Poulans and Stihl all made great saws. We just have our favotite brands that's all.

Actually that is what happens when someone is oversensitive about their choice of things to like.
I like my Poulans and I could give a rats A$$ what anyone says about them or me.
I expected the same from others also.
I don't care if Aaron likes his big old Macs that is his choice.
Some people like self mutilation but I've never understood that concept either.
We need guys like him to keep guys like me from letting the old Mac's go the way of the dodo bird, as that is surely what I would do.

McCulloch was a great company at one time and produced some cutting edge saws in their day and they built those same saws after that day had been gone for a good while.
They built antique saws LONG after everyone else quit.

I have run both the 795 and the 8500 quite a bit and I just couldn't believe that anyone would choose a well used 1933 Mack truck over a super clean 77 Lil' Red Express.

Please accept my sincere apology Aaron if I offended you with my comments about your big yellow pigs, that was not my intent.

To everyone else who sees this I wish to apologize to you for lowering the level of class in the Poulan thread.

I enlarged just a few of the holes when I first got mine....and it performs very well. I believe the saw (even in stock form) was well engineered, but if there are appreciable gains to be had...then I might as well look at them.

My neighbors won't let me modify any mufflers, but I've found a few older saws come with a "stack" which is about like a straight pipe. I like to try them out at about 2am to see how they run.

Getting a 3400 running

Started tinkering with my 3400 today. I finally got it running....kinda. I was setting the high rpm and it seemed to run fine with no load. As soon as I put it in wood it died, quickly, in pine. It has an 18" bar and is running 72lgx chain. I know this may be more than this saw was designed for but was expecting better. Are there some things I should check for or tips you can share to help me get this heavy pig going. After I get it running I was planning to clean up the exhaust port and do a muffler mod. I'll take whatever you guys can give me:help:

Apology accepted Mike. I apologize to you and the group for letting myself "take the bait". I should have been expecting a few jabs about my mental health after stating such an outrageous choice of things to like (for this forum...when in Rome...). I do think a better analogy would be a '61 Lightweight Dodge with a 413 Max Wedge vs a '77 Lil Red Express however...but that's just my opinion again! Heck....I'm an 'eccentric' Old Truck nut (IHC mostly) and would probably choose the '33 Mack...

Now, I have a bar from a S25DA, 3/8 lo pro, will it fit this saw? Or a wildthing bar which is .325 I'm guessing? I didn't even look at the saw to see what it takes. Did they come with .325? or 3/8?

A small Husky/Partner K095 .325 bar should work ok, that is if you file the adjuster holes straight up so the olier will oil through the adjuster holes like a K041 bar does.

The 16" K041 .325 bars are a little harder to find, unless ordering new.

A good running 3400 will have no trouble pulling that bar and chain combination in pine...or oak....is the tank vent working?

I agree. It should pull an 18in bar no problem. Did you check compression? If 125 or higher you may have Hi needle too lean. If you have a tach check rpms. Look for around 10500

to farther add to that, with a gentle touch, they'll wear a 20" and cut just fine. Don't forget these saws are all about torque and the 3400-4000 all have the same stroke.
