oak tree fungus/ pruning

We recently purchase a home with a 2 acre yard filled with oak, hickory and pine trees. They are in desperate need of trimming. When should they be trimmed? Also the post oaks seem to have a brownish red fungus growing on smaller limbs- what could this be and what should be done? Thanks.
 
Find a few qualified arborists in your area. Get a few opinions and estimates. Even hiring a consulting arborist in your area just to evaluate the trees without trying to sell you the job is a good idea. You can find consulting arborists in your area by going to
