thats nice to see for sure ,that generation isnt like todays in so many ways .its almost like they are aliens stuck in a world that forgot them.you lived by your hands ,slow and steady wins the race they didnt wait around for a handout they knew either they were going to have to do it or it wont ever get done.its a nice reminder to see a relic of olden days were honesty was the best policy ,a handshake was your word and if someone need help you dropped what you were doing and rolled your sleeves up ,not becuase you would benefit but becuase it was the right thing to do and another person needed your help.some of my best memeries as a kid were listening to my grandpa and how in the 20's he would get firewood down in the gully with a team of horses .. his fishing adventures catching boney suckers in the crickbed ..eating doctored up livestock feed so their family could survive through the depression. today everyone is in a huge hurry in a fight to collect more "stuff" that they dont want, only to impress people that they dont like

Well said, I agree. Today alot of folks are in such a hurry. I really try to listen to the advice that the older generation has to offer, because they have already been through much of what we will face. My wife says that I am the oldest young man she knows.

That is a really great story, helping folks like that gives a feeling unlike any other.
I love talking to my 83 year old neighbor who is also my 2nd cousin. He knows more about the old times in the neighborhood than anyone around. He recently brought over an 18volt rechargeable saw that he was very dissapointed in, wanted my opinion on it. I told him about the Stihl saws with the EZ start. He has a good ole' 025 but cannot physically start it anymore, especially when cold. So me and him go off the the local dealer and he buys a brand new 210 EZ start saw! I tell ya when he got home and started that saw without anyone's help and went to cutting wood he was happier than a pig in poop. I just hope at 83 yrs old, if I make it that long I'm still in shape and have the desire to be out cuttin' my own wood!

old dogs and old people

nothing in this world gives me more satisfaction than going into this Ill ole town dinner close by....and i swear, sometimes ill go in for a quick bite and end up there for a couple of hours, mostly listening, but you can just pull up a stool and jump right in with these kind of folk. You get to here some whoppers too,and cuttin up and stuff, but these guys would be there for one another in a second.Being a city boy ,I've always rather talk to the older guys any day ,cause they didn't have any reason to B.S. you,and if they accepted you ,you were considered an ole timer too.Like the other post said,my wife said i was born an ole timer......i take that with pride thank you!

I surly get along with the older men to good also, But I just hope there is some one to repay the Manny favors wen I am there age and have a hard time on my one. what cums a round normally goes a round.

I had a similar experience with a 90 year old. He could barely lift a 5 pound "branch log". He came by when I was in full swing; cutting up an old walnut oarchard. But he knew I was going to help him (some how). He started by asking me if what I was doing was leagal. Then he cross examined me on every point I made.

When I finally figured out what he wanted, I was happy to fill the bed of his (brand new) truck with the scrappy remnants of what I had cut (stuff I wouldn't have bothered with). He said " I like the small peices cause its easier on my hands now".

Then he gets to telling me that he was a cop in the city (San Fransisco) for 40 years. He told me of all the "Al Capone" types he arrested and put up for life on the rock (Alcatraz). (I know Al Capone wasn't arrested in San Fran.).

When I asked him where his new pickup truck came from on a retire COPs salary, he said: "My son became a home builder and has done very well. He thinks I'm crazy for living the way I do now that he's rich. But I can't just sit arround and be rich". So after filling his pickup with tinnie logs I asked him his last name. He said: Kaufman.

What a great story, There is alot of times we drive by and just think later we shouldve stopped and helped but we dont. I too was touched by your story and you will be blessed for doing this guy a favor. Im sure he never thought once about the people driving by with out helping but you did. That shows something about your enterself and you a good person. you never hesitated u just turned around. U im sure was just as busy as anyone else at your house but you took the time to help someone else out. We all need to learn from this letter you wrote that we need to just take a minute at times to help others out. THanks for writing this it touched several people im sure, not so much about the old man but of how we all need to take a few min and help others

Interesting stuff and a good find. But I think old man Kaffman is still driving around in his new PU. He was a tough guy; Ready to bust my chops as soon as I took my eyes of the ball.

I can only imagine what it must have been like to be his son.
