Well to me your both wrong. I feel you should be able to use lethal force to protect you belongings.

Rope, ole bean, you can "feel" all you want. The reality is, the lawyers will have the last word.

You're right, it shouldn't be that way.

But it is.

Now that you have a description of the perp's vehicle, you might spread the word among your friends, to look out for anyone selling firewood with a similar van on the property.

You might get lucky and find the perp.

One other thing... while the perp may not be one of your friends, it may be someone who might have learned about your splitter when one of your friends borrowed the rig.

I just got this feeling it's not a complete stranger.

I wish you luck.

Had mine stolen Memorial Day weekend 2007 while we were at camp. They also stole the Master lock that was through the hitch lever. The new one is chained to a tree with a Game Camera mounted out of sight to take a picture of anyone that goes near it.

When you make a new splitter get some part of it plasma cut with your name or details on it, hard to grind off what isn't there, sure they can still weld a plate over it but you can make it very difficult to do so and it will be very obvious.

The reality of the situation in my state (and many others) is that we have adopted the "Castle Doctrine" which protects my rights of to defending myself or occupants from violence or intrusion that may lead to violence. This same law also protects me from civil suits brought by the assailant or next-of-kin.

I have been reading this post and thought that I would add my 2cents. I took a piece of brass with my name and number and put it inside of my gun stocks and wedged it with some paper in case of myguns being stolen. You could do this with about anything and the brass plate last a long time. Good luck and hope you find who did it.

Install an "electric starter" and lojack or similar.

Just turn on power to the unit when you put it away. (small switch in remote location)

Yeah until they steal the game camera too. One of the first security cameras we had installed where I work, we watched as we saw a black dude climb the pole and disconnect and steal the camera!! By then the police arrived and nabbed him...millions of dollars of equipment in the facility and he stole the $200 camera to pawn no doubt!....one of the best things you can do to try and recover something stolen is put your SSN and drivers license number on the item somewhere. Most law enforcement agencies can run those numbers if they suspect the item is stolen and get a name. Almost all stolen property reports ask for SSN and/or DL numbers, thereby helping the police figure out the item in question is stolen. Most people dont know the serial number of an item stolen (who does?) but as a former LE officer I can't tell you how many times I found crack-heads in possession of stuff I KNEW wasn't theirs, only to run the serial number and get no hit, thereby sending them on their way. But running the name will bring up a report as them as victim, listing the items stolen helping the cops put 2 and 2 together.
Yeah, Joe the crackhead who lives in downtown L.A. is the owner of a Husky 395XP.... NOT.!!!
