I decided to shut down my Shaver165 for the summer. There where only a few hot coals and the water temp was about 125*.
I wanted to try to burn off some of the creosote inside the firebox and did what others suggested. I stuffed it full of cardboard and opened the draft all the way. I didn't see any flames shooting out the stack but just decided to let the cardboard do its job.
About a half hour later I noticed flames on the roof of the OWB all around the chimney.
I ran out with the garden hose to put it out. It seems the high temp silicone and some of the paint caught fire. I didn't drench the fire. I just sprayed it a little to kill the flames. I had to spray several times to keep the fire out.
I never thought that could happen just burning up some cardboard.
I just hope I didn't do any serious damage to the temper of the flue. I doubt I did. Probably wouldn't matter anyway.
I actually forgot all about the OWB until I saw those flames a half hour later.
It figures, last day I have it fired up and this happens.
