Cerran, if you go back a number of pages we detailed a fix for these yoke springs using one from a P20 series. There was a service bulletin posted outlining the procedure. If this interests you, I have the spring for the mod. It is a more sturdy spring and works just fine.

Sounds like a reasonable plan, any idea around which page the outline was at? Sorting through 80+ pages will be time consuming.

Just FYI Wallenberg was a bust unfortunately.

painting

Jerry, Alodine is a surface converter, I think it stops the corrosion process prior to priming. The guys at work use it on aircraft parts as a step in the paint process. It's made for use on aluminum mainly but I use it anyways in hopes that it does the job here. Immediately I rinse thoroughly, dry it with a heat gun and then coat it with primer.

Do you sand prior to paint application?

Do you know what metals are used in magnesium alloy?

Brendon.

If coating over the primer within 30 days after application no sanding is necessary with the etch primer and a year or so with the epoxy primer. The main concern I had with the magnesium alloy turning dark is that a layer of magnesium chloride is formed immediately and that is not good for coatings to adhere to.The etch primers are supposed to be able to cut through this thin layer and reach untarnished metal below but I try to get it coated immediately. I had the pleasure of talking with an older gent who worked all his life at the Halifax Naval Dockyard where he was a spray painter and coatings specialist on specialty metals used on warships and had a long discussion on mag/alum protective coatings, primers and paints especially used in marine environments. His take on it was to get the mag coated with protection as quickly as possible and he recommended that the parts just be washed, rinsed, dried then primed before it turned dark. Now these had to be small parts that were easy to wash and dry, you could not do an airplane that way or any large surface area so other methods would have to be used, ie. surface conditioners.
Brendon; I do not know the full makeup of metals used in chainsaw castings, I always assumed it was a combination of magnesium Mg. and aluminum Al. with the magnesium for lightness and aluminum for strength. What the ratio`s of each metals are or if there is other metals or elements added would take a manufacturer to divulge trade secrets most likely or someone to pay for an analysis of some parts at a research facility.
When welding broken parts it seems that the metal is mostly aluminum and can be welded with aluminum tig. Some real thin pieces will just burn up though with mig but can be welded with a torch and filler rods.

P41 progress

Here is a photo of my P41 fully stripped and primed. I think I'll shoot some Pioneer yellow tomorrow. Here's hoping all goes well. I'll need to pick up some semi-gloss black on Monday to do the rest.

I have many new parts on hand including crankshaft, P&C, hardware, oil pump, brake band and most of the plastic and rubber parts. I sure wish I had some decals...

More to follow but I'm going to wait at least a week before reassembly for the paint to cure.

Man, that looks sweet! I have a couple of P41s, but probably just enough to make one (can't recall for sure right now).

Just seeing how good the parts look right now makes me want to add my P41 to my projects list!

If you really need a place to do decals for you, there is a guy in Manitoba that does reproductions. He needs a pic and some measurements. If you want his contact info, PM me and I will provide it (although I may have to contact him on another forum to get his email - can't recall if I have it or not). I have seen his work and it is top-notch.

I just inventoried my Pioneers tonight:

Farmlite
Super 2400
2400L
1074 (4)
P40
P41 (2)
P25
P26
3071 (4)

decals

CJ, if you're thinking of the same place that I am (in Winnipeg), my cousin works for that outfit. I had him look into making repro decals for my P62 and he quoted $200 per minimum order of fifty. I could end up spending a lot of money that way but as of now it looks like my only choice. I'll send you a P.M. about your contact.

I'll be doing a P51 next. I have most of the parts I need. I've ordered a good crankcase for it and just need a starter cover and clutch cover in good shape.

Nice collection by the way! I think I'd like restore the 3071 if I had the gaskets for it. Those are great saws.

It's Winnipeg, but I wanted singles for an old tiller that I am restoring and I was told about $30-$40 for about 5 decals. That's about $8 per decal and he is willing to do singles.

I am heading out early tomorrow for another saw run, but will be back before 21:00 and will check for your PM. I will also contact this decal guy and get his contact info for you. Hopefully it will work out as I too will need a decal source for some of these saws.

Thanks for the comment about my collection. It all came at once and it really was one of those instances that up until that point I had only heard about. With all of the running around I am doing I haven't really had time to sit down and figure out which saw to do first, but I only have one more run to an ex-Jonsered dealer next weekend and then I should have weekends to myself again. :D

I know what you're saying....

i like those old saws myself, but finding parts can get really frustrating.I bought an old Pioneer 3200 a couple years ago that only needed a starter housing and an air filter.I couldnt find either,so I sold the saw on ebay. Its a shame, the little bit I ran that saw,I was amazed at the chain speed and power of a 1969 or 1970 model saw.Good luck in finding parts,I like to see them old geezers run.

My 3270 was pretty complete, although I had to muck about with the primer to get it to start reliably. A powerful saw for their age, but mine was a bit cantankerous, and although it ate through trees with amazing speed, I was forever fiddling with the mixtures and it over-oiled the chain something chronic so I sold it. Now I really regret it, but I've got my eyes on a 3200 now...

Picked up the rest of my "lot" today.

Here is most of the Pioneer portion. There are 6 - 8 more in boxes, but all are models that I have listed previously, or have listed below.

Pioneersfrom20090613-CroppedMedium.jpg

In this pic: 4 - RA (but I think I saw 2 different recoil covers, so will investigate further); 2 - 1110 (1 or 2 more in boxes); 400 (plus at least one more in a box); and multiple covers.

Speaking of covers, guess what I thought when I unloaded this box?

Sadly, each of those 2 covers have blemishes.

One more run next weekend (to a different source) and then it is time to get to work on these saws. I will likely have to build a separate building for my saws - somehow when I placed my ad I never envisioned ending up with as many saws as I did (although I did dream about getting this lucky with Jonsereds and various old saws).

Great score, You have done very well on this find.

Congrats:cheers:

Lee

Thanks, Lee. :)

I have been very fortunate during the last 2 - 3 weeks and even if things do not work out as well as I hope for next weekend (he is an ex-Jonsereds dealer) I will have plenty of projects to keep me occupied.

Hopefully no one takes offense to my recent postings. I really hope that they do not come across as, "Look at what I got! Look at me! Look at me!" :D

I try and keep my posts in the relevant threads as I like sharing with AS members who have similar interests (Jonsereds, old Pioneers, etc., and just old saws in general, as it turns out). As I move forward with repairs and/or restorations I will be drawing on the wealth of information and experience that is represented in the Chainsaw forum and am really looking forward to how much I will learn as I go through these saws.

Thanks again!

Just stripped my 3270 down(totally)for its resto job, looking forward to making it like new again:chainsaw:

Sweet!

How are you going to strip the paint? I am thinking of sandblasting when I get to that stage, but I will need a bigger air dryer first.

Also, where are you getting your paint from? Is it 2-part? We do not have any local sources (although I have not checked the local automotive body shops) so if I end up traveling for paint I will likely line up a number of restoration projects so that I can justify the expense.

... and of course, are you taking pics? If you are please post them up in this thread as you more forward with your restoration.

Pioneer super 620 parts?

I'm new to this site, so apologies if the answers are somewhere I haven't found yet.

I have a super 620 (I think it is a super 620, not a plain 620), bought new by my father ~1963 I guess. Going fine, but the bar is badly worn on both sides.

Any idea where I can get a replacement? either a decent secondhand but genuine Pioneer part for that saw, or a modern replacement that will fit. Bar seems to be 22" long, 0.058" gauge, 0.405" link pitch, 34 cutters.

The other thing I could do with is a copy of a manual.

Should have pointed out I am in the UK.

Welcome to AS!

There are some great resources here in this thread that can give you an idea of how easy/hard it may be to get a bar and/or manual. They should be along shortly to give you some answers.

P-series paint

I sprayed my P41 on the weekend and it looks like the colour turned out perfect. Also attached is the paint code for the Sherwin-Williams Genesis paint I used. It's quite a step up from the original industrial Pioneer stuff.

Propliner

Thanks a bunch for those paint codes! From the looks of your case half it exactly what I'd like to use.

I assume that I can use the same paint for the RA, HC, 600, etc?

PM sent.
