Hey scooter - you may want to read up a little on OWB's before joining a site and criticizing a bunch of people. It may not suit *your* situation in California, but is the best alternative for *my* situation. As I've said many times, it is not for everyone.
I can come up with a hundred reasons to go with a owb and just as many reasons to go with the conventional iwb. I have the IWB in my basement so what heat doesnt go up the chimney, goes into the house. In my next house, I will probably go with a more non conventional heating system. Now my nonconventional system wont work everywhere because it is solar and does rely on sunlight for the heat source. I do plan on having a backup IWB. IWB or OWB, they have one thing, or two, in common. They both take wood and wood creates mess, and even free wood isnt free, time and effort must be expended and repeatable if your going to burn wood. Sun shines for free everyday, just more some days than others, Once the solar heating system is in place, its pretty much a "forget about it system" requiring little more than routine cleaning and maintenance. If the sun stops shining, forget about it, we will all die anyways. To make solar work, you have to have the correct properties all ready in place. Clear views of the sun in the correct orientation to put collectors on the roof, or adequate size property to locate the collectors on the ground. The collectors must be big enough to actually provide the heat needed. You also need some way to store and distribute heat thru out the house. Storage facilities can be pretty large in size and are generally heavy so placing them on a roof probably isnt an option. Every location and installation will be different and my planned system wont work in the majority of properties available, but I think I can make it work on the property I plan to build my new house.

If Trump is all that ,what's that make Trudeau?I mean aside from being a liberal!
Liberal/Conservative....Democrat/Republican....Does it really matter nowadays? It's all the same, lets fold to corporate pressure and do what they want so we can make money for our 1%'er friends at the top.

Did you happen to catch Trump's speech at Davos Sw. yesterday? Many of the liberal/socialists of Europe are upset with his ideas on U.S. trade with the rest of the world. His attitude will not mean Canada or Mexico will be kicked to the curb.I can't speak about Mexico but living just 14 miles from the U.S/Canada border and visiting Canada every 4 or 5 weeks I can say trade between our two countries is alive and well!Heres hoping we stay good neighbors.

Dscooterman, ya know I never really sat down and thought about it but you are right. This outdoor stove thing is just crazy and doesn't work at all. I'm putting everything up for sale, I'm going to buy one of them fancy indoor stoves and going to burn dried unicorn crap in it. I'll just keep my exterior doors open in the 2 houses and the heat will jump over the driveway and heat the other house. I have no idea why I never thought of this before. Makes much more sense.
Thanks for the heads up we need more California forward thinkers like you.

Wow...!!!! Rough day? Little out of character for you ;)

Jakers, yeah I just thought we all were trying to post the silliest thing we could think of and scooter fella was going 1st.
I'm actually going to step up my search for materials to build my next owb. My stainless is getting pretty old and everyone I talk to that has one says mine is the oldest they have heard of that is still going strong. I don't want to be in a position where I have to heat with electric or propane even for a few weeks.

Cantoo just come pick up my OWB as a spare. Since I read scooter's post I shut mine down. I ended up just building a fire in the middle of my garage (fortunately it has one of those fancy cement floors) and opened the door to the house...voila heated garage and house, added advantage I don't have to remind the kids to close the door!!! I'm skipping that whole firebox crap. Wife is kinda wondering about the new hole in the roof of the garage to let the smoke out (told her it worked for the Indians!!).
Any paint experts out there? I am having trouble with paint bubbling off the sides of the cars in the garage (sides nearest the fire). I fixed the problem of the handles being too hot to open the doors with some oven mitts.

I have a owb and a wood stove in my basement. When it’s super cold I use both! For some reason just knowing there is a fire in the wood stove makes me feel warmer??
