How many different kinds of Maple trees are there?

How do I know a sugar maple from any other?

What if anything should I do to prepare my newly planted poplar trees, for winter? They seem to have survived the drought fairly well, but I'm afraid if we have another bad winter, I might lose them.

If we just look at species that grow in S/E WI (you would not tell us where you come from so i'll thatl about where I am.) I can pull twelve off the top of my head.

Best way is to look at the bud, it is long thin and looks like it will poke your eye out.

Look at this page and the link on it

then examine your trees to see if you may have a root problem.

With poplars it is not the cold winters but late frosts that can get them.
